So they aren't trying to build it on the exact same spot then?   Huh?

It is not directly on Ground 0 but I think it could have been placed in a more secluded spot further away from G0.

maya... its a few blocks from the WTC, but was an area also affected by the
debris.  It is still considered to be in the "ground zero" zone.

To me it would be like having a "Saddam Hussein" peace memorial in the
    middle of kurdistan.

Ok, well then it is very inconsiderate of them then.   Is space at a premium in NYC?  Are there plenty of other places it could have been built if a new mosque is needed?

where they are  planning to build it IS land at a premium,

there's a thousand other places they could build  it!

A thousand other places in Lower Manhattan? Specifically in the Financial District/Battery Park area? I don't think so.

I blame the terrorists for crashing into a centrally located building... couldn't they hit some coat factory in NJ?

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

They are building the mosque/cultural center specifically to cater to Muslims in that area-- I would think particularly those who work on Wall Street and want a place close by to go to. Look, New York's not some little cowtown-- that section of Lower Manhattan (which is a tiny geographical portion of Manhattan, which is, in turn only one of the 5 boroughs), meaning the Financial District/Battery Park/City Hall/Tribeca houses about 80,000 residents, and during the workweek, including commuters, tourists and shit, it's well over 300,000 in the Financial District alone.

I'm aware of that q man.  The timing is bad, and their "REASONS" are stupid.
IF, for whatever reason, they ever prayed there (two or more muslims), it is
automatically a mosque, and once its a mosque, it can NEVER close, or be
used for anything else BUT a mosque.  If so, as I  said, the  entire muslim world
    will go ape shit.

Ive scanned SEVEN pages of mosques in the Manhattan area, and theres still
more but im tired of hitting the "next" key.

How many are in THAT PART of Manhattan? How many can a Muslim trader on Wall Street walk to for prayer during lunch? If even just 1% of the quarter million folks working in that area are observant Muslims, you're talking 2,500 people who are gonna be shit out of luck if they want to do the noontime and/or afternoon prayers at mosque and there's not one in that specific area.

Look, I'm not wild about this shit either and I think the people behind this are behaving insensitively either due to arrogance, cluelessness or a combination of both. Nor am I that sympathetic that someone have a place of worship close by, being an antitheist. But put it in perspective-- there are likely thousands of Muslims in this area that the mosque is looking to serve and ANY mosque built to cater to these folks is gonna be "within a few blocks" of ground zero-- it's unavoidable due to the geography and population density, and people are still gonna bitch about it. They could have specifically chosen a building site as far away from ground zero as they could while still being able to serve their target demographic, and there would have still been protests over it.

    fuck you

I'm not for this mosque but its a constitutional right so no american can complain.
  • Re: Ground Zero Mosque being Called "Cordoba House"

Fault logic, Thamina. Although I do think people are complaining too much, Americans certainly can complain about the exercise of Constitutional rights. The Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis have a right to hold rallies in Center City if they want, and I would oppose any government restrictions on that right, but I not only can complain about it, I've got a moral obligation to complain about it. Because something is a protected right does not automatically make its exercise good, moral, or wise. And I'll complain all I want about things I think are bad, immoral or unwise, whether the people have a right to do it or not.

    fuck you

Well, Americans can complain, but they can't ban it. Unless they change the constitution to make it endorse a certain religion over others.
  • Re: Ground Zero Mosque being Called "Cordoba House"

Right, complain and ban are two different things. I complain about men who wear open-toed footwear but I don't want to ban it...oh, wait...I actually DO want to ban it.

To me complaining against something thats allowed according to the US constitution is as bad as complaining against the constitution itself. does that make sense?

Well Q-Man has a constitutional right to go on a radio program and say "I hate Chinese people. Chinks are filthy". But Chinese Americans have the right to complain about it.

Well, I think so, but not sure what the courts would say. After all, they've given the FCC authority to fine people for uttering "offensive" words on broadcast TV and radio.

hmmm thats debatable though. Because like I said, 2 blocks is like a whole neighborhood in NYC.

But I see your point too at the same time

objecting or complaining about something is what we call here in the USA,
"FREEDOM OF SPEECH" whether people agree/like or disagree/dislike it.
That is our golden calf, if you will.  So if some are offended/upset about a
mosque being built on/near ground zero, that is their right to protest.
