Sounds like the veggies you've encountered require a good spanking. I've never had an issue eating anywhere as a vegan. It's true that most people may make an effort for you, which I'd always be very appreciative of, but realistically I'd happily munch on raw veg or whatever else was around. It's a matter of courtesy and not being an obnoxious arsehole as a guest in someone elses house.

It's the preaching I can't stand and the attempt to convert you. If they just quietly mention they do not eat meat and if they could just have salad. That is fine but the ones I know have this need to constantly mention why they do not eat meat or dairy.
I eat meat, I love it. I love it more than anything else in this world, if it was a choice between sex and meat. There is no contest.

To be fair, those people are generally avoided by everyone I know at all costs, vegan and omnivore alike. I've come across a few people in the AR movement who completely lack tact, but they're generally unaffiliated ime because no one else wants to deal with them. Probably why you see them outside chicken shops like those guys on Oxford Street with megaphones shouting about the impending armageddon. ie. Not representative of the majority.

So what do you guys think about this vegan woman (starts at about 6:00)? It's the first part of a documentary about Extreme Beliefs in general.

As for me, I'm vegetarian but I'm not pushy or preachy or anything about it.

I tend to zone out when PETA people start taking their clothes off, but she came across as well-meaning and sincere. Good luck to her.

It is a close contest when it comes to who I dislike more.
Preachy Vegans or crazy Animal Activists.

    I'm just ... wow ... I just ... can't express ...
She would hate Africa. Oh wow, just imagining her face if she saw how we kill animals back home is just hilarious.

I should also mention that she has a youtube account veganshani and you can see a lot of her comments throughout the Extreme Beliefs documentary.

May I ask how you came about giving up meat? Born in a household without it?

Well, in the second part of the documentary, she mentions that her sister was murdered so that might explain her beliefs.

I thought it was over the videos she watched over animal mistreatment.

I am allergic to dairy, so if I go to a gathering of course I tell the host, but bring my own food. I don't eat eggs either (just never liked them), so if I didn't eat meat I'd be very unhealthy. In fact, I noticed when I was a Muslim and cutting out the pork made me unhealthy without the eggs and dairy. I do drink soy milk.

My family are omni and we didn't eat vegetarian meals at all owing to my father being a meat and potatoes type.

I stopped consuming animals once I recognised that it was a desire rather than a need. If I were faced with a choice to hunt or starve then the choice would probably be different (and I have killed animals in the past). But the fact remains that I don't have to consume animals and I find no compelling argument for placing the whims of my stomach over their lives. I don't know how sentient each animal is, or how much their nervous systems are able to experience pain as we would understand it - but from my experiences and interactions with them I'd rather not subject non-human animals to what could be pain or suffering as much as possible. I also have environmental concerns about the impact of animal agriculture, overfishing, etc. Last but not least I am not comfortable with living beings being classed as property and treated as commodities, especially ones which display a  preference for freedom and in fact show demonstratable signs of distress at being held captive.

That's as short as I can make it.  Smiley

Not really much to say to that except it was interesting thank you.
I have killed animals before, I prefer personally eating what I kill. I know where my meat comes from then. I don't like those meat eaters who are squeamish about where it comes from. If one can eat it, they should stomach killing it/see it die.

Don't you ever ... you know, miss meat?

Since the thread has already been thoroughly jacked, what's your favourite? I use the unsweetened alpro light as a staple, but this is my favourite (just a bit pricey and a pita to get hold of).

Totally agree with you here. Awareness of what we eat is very important, imo.

Don't you ever ... you know, miss meat?

At first, yes. I used to inhale steaks from a few feet away. Being on expenses a lot I'd just walk into the best steakhouse I could find and order a big filet mignon (blue) with bottle of merlot to wash it down - those tastes don't change overnight. But over time the flavour fades in your memory to a degree and also it becomes less appealing as meat becomes less "normal" as a part of your diet (if that makes sense). Nowadays it doesn't generally elicit any reaction from me at all unless it evokes the memory of something / some place I enjoyed, but that's more about the aroma of spices and marinades, etc.

I love how this has turned into a thread about vegetarianism. It's one of the few issues where I actually agree with Slavoj Žižek:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TqyKsnQD38

Anyway, to bring things back on topic, I still haven't tried pork. Haven't really had the chance, since my family doesn't eat it, and I don't really eat out much myself. I'm planning on trying it in the near future though - it'll have to be at a restaurant or something.

I hate cooking for vegetarians. They are so damn picky.
And don't get me started on Vegans.

When my friends come round mine, I prepare a meal for them that suits their needs. Why the fuck sake can't they give me meat when I go round theirs?! It's just rude and I don't eat rabbit food for main.

That's because it is like religion. And by religion I think I mean Islam. They expect you to let them wear burqa at your place, and when you visit them you are expected to cover up.  whistling2

I have tried cold smoked ham and pepperoni. Tasted good. I've yet to try bacon and just regular pork.

I can have chocolate in very small amounts, same with ice cream. However, there are specialty stores around here that sell vegan (ugh, but it has no dairy) chocolate and ice creams. Finding lactose free stuff at an ice cream parlor is hard. When I'm at the parlor, I get a baby size cup of ice cream.

I never heard of that one. I normally drink Silk Vanilla or Chocolate. Lately my mom has been buying the store brand and it's pretty good.

Not sure if you can get this over there, but look out for Booja Booja's Stuff in a Tub. It's a very tasty (and relatively healthy) alternative to dairy ice cream - the chocolate version is similar to haagen-dazs but very light and non-cloying. It's expensive (think Ben & Jerry's) but I don't eat stuff like that often so it's a nice treat.

Nothing is similar to haagen-dazs! Haagen dazs is like having heaven on the tip of your tongue. That first taste when you haven't had it for so long  Yummy

I have to look for that. I always wanted to try coconut milk ice cream, but people say it's really fatty. I'm trying to lose weight, so I didn't even bother.
