Its murder, no matter how 'humane' you make it. Around week 7ish when the heart starts to develop.

Would you ever avoid cutting the grass for fear of killing an innocent worm?

You don't mow the lawn so you can kill a worm, if it happens its by accident. 'Abortion' is deliberate.

    Stupid argument.

"Modern man's great illusion has been to convince himself that of all that has gone before he represents the zenith of human accomplishment, but can't summon the mental powers to read anything more demanding than emoticons. Fascinating. "

You don't abort because you want to 'kill' something, you do it because it will negatively affect your life.

I am generally against it (except in extreme circumstances such as when the mother's life is in danger or when there is no chance for the foetus to survive for long in life and reason).  The reason is that I feel that no one should have the power of life and death on another individual or something that will eventually develop into a fully functioning individual.

What is murder? Killing a cell? A virus? An animal? A human?

    And why?

Thamina answered you properly.  Abortion is usually a deliberate and preplanned action.

I was more trying to make the point that there are different degrees of 'beings'. Killing, say, a human adult, is not the same as killing a non-sentient cluster of cells.. or a worm...
  • Re: Who else is still a virgin?
     Reply #280 - December 08, 2010, 01:53 PM

    Why?

Because I believe in living freely and I am against totalitarianism and slavery.  I believe that no individual or body has the right to impose or decide on the life of another or several.  I consider a foetus to be a human in development and this in my opinion makes it different from other cells.  And therefore I believe that no one has the right to impose and limit its course either (except in extreme circumstances)

Killing what will be 1 day another human. No matter how pro-abortion you are, deep down you're glad that 19 yrs ago your mum didn't have a choice of 'aborting' you.  Tongue

Yeah, but in the case of abortion, the fetus is demonstrably a sentient and aware organism. If it were very early in gestation, then I guess you could just call it a 'cluster of cells,' but after several months, the fetus is essentially every bit as human as a new-born infant.

You have not taken into account the potential of this special cluster of cells and what they are going to result in.  Not all cells are the same.   Why is it acceptable to limit the progress of a cluster of cells that is eventually going to give rise to a fully functioning human?  Why should anyone have the authority to deny that cluster of cells the chance to eventually develop into an adult human who can contribute greatly to society?

The foetus you aborted cannot feel glad or saddened.

It does not matter, why do you think that someone should have the right to deny it the chance to feel those things one day?

Tell that to the contents of a teenage boy's wet tissue.

Why should it be granted? The foetus depends on the mother's body. It uses her energy and resources. Her life.

The zygote is more than just sperm.  Sperm in a tissue is not going to develop into a human being.  Another bollocks comparision

It continues doing so well after it is born too..  Your point is?  Does having a dependent give you the right to decide whether they live or die?

Yep it's a zygote. It has the potential to grow into a fully functioning that can contribute to society, like any of those sperm can.

No, that's not the same thing, and PS has a valid point there.  Once a baby is born any competent adult can keep it alive, before its born its growing inside someone else's body - and that person has rights too.

Should they fuse with an egg that is.  All have the potential to fuse with an egg.  Once they zygote is formed that is when the situation changes and you have a cell that has a good chance of developing into a functioning human being.

It still requires work/energy to get it to develop into a fully functioning human. Any of those sperm could be artifically inseminated into an egg.
