    To answer your questions Mounta:

    (1)  No

    (2)  None of your business

    (3) An unending succession of meaningless casual encounters. Not that it's any of your business

    (4)   If you mean John Connor in Terminator. Me and him are good buddies. If you mean Jesus Christ, I've got nothing against the long-dead cult leader. Just don't believe he's the son of god.

    (5)  I was fortunate to be spared a religious upbringing by my parents.

    (6)   I form my own opinions from my own studies and it happens that I find myself agreeing with a great deal of what Spencer writes. He could possibly choose his allies more carefully. Unfortunately people who are in many respects rightwing whackos are the only ones currently talking any sense about Islam. This is a hefty indictment of a political left which has abandoned the field to such people and responds to legitimate concern about Islam with knee-jerk cries of "racism".

    (7)  I'm mad. But not THAT mad.

Did you ever on any discussion forums write under the user name "The Divine Prophet"?

Why is Turkey's accession to the EU a non-starter?

    Sorry for interrupting MAB but:

Turkey was officially given a status of a candidate for a full EU membership in 1999 and the negotiations started in 2005. The negotiations are unfortunately proceeding slowly, one of the main reasons being that Cyprus already is an EU member and therefore is consulted and has veto power in all EU matters.

If you don't mind me asking MAB what is your take on the issue of Turkey's integration into EU? On top of that I would be interested to hear your opinion on Atatürk and his policies.
    Thanks!

I guess it's not the size of it and religion and economy?

I am not one of those peasants who plan the transfers of your every other post to the graveyard of the Rant arena. I don't even mind a well deserved teasing every now and then. However, you crossed the line with Joseph. I will let you admit your mistake (you can even blame it on senility) and confess that you have nothing but brotherly love for me. This would be quid, as I've observed it in you great work. On the pro quo side of my equation - cross me and you will find no friend nor helper in me. I suggest we leave the childish games and benefit from an adult discussion on our complexes.

Because it will open the floodgates to Muslim immigration from Turkey and beyond into Europe -  of which Turkey is not anyhow a geographcial part. Remember the population of Turkey voted in an obvious revanchist shariaist as Prime Minister - proving that decades of Kemalism failed to purge large parts of the population of Islam. Can you provide any reasons why Turkey SHOULD be permitted to join the EU?

We are probably talking about different things here.

Neither size of a country nor its religion are a part of the Acquis - if you read my claim again you will see that I was referring to the negotiation process exclusively.

As far as the economy is concerned things are a bit more complicated (lots of chapters are related to economy one way or another) but so far 14 chapters were blocked by Cyprus, mostly due to the fact that Turkey refused to open its ports and airports to traffic from Cyprus on top of that France blocked 3 chapters in total.

So yeah, Cyprus and issues surrounding it definitely are the main problem regarding the pace of Turkish negotiations with EU atm.

OK, Kenan, you may be right, but I believe that if Cyprus disappeared from the face of the earth tomorrow, Turkey's chances to join EU would not improve by any means. I'm not an expert it's just my feeling, Kenan, so I don't want to argue about this funny subject.

So you're saying fuck those military puppeteers if every human being in Turkey is not allowed freedoms that an Englishman can enjoy? I completely agree, the freedoms are absolute, thus non-negotiable in any way. Down with fake democracy!

What happens when a hairy Fatima, aggrieved by the hijab ban, hauls the attorney general before the court and complains that her freedom is being truncated? Or when the hot-for-Shariah crowd lodge a suit againt the goverment for banning their political participation?

What the hairy Fatima is going to discover though is that the sword cuts both ways; that LGBT rights organizations can do the same for example.

There is a war of ideas in Turkey. The European Union can either sit this one out or try to direct the future course of the nation's history. Seems to me a no brainer.

Who do you think is wining in this war and what is the best course of action here as far as EU is concerned?

It's good to hear that the culture war has been largely won by the secularist and I do agree that EU must help Turkey in any way possible including a full EU membership. But curbing the power of Turkish military might prove to be troublesome because Turkish military is the bulwark of Turkish secularism and because the military will have to retreat and give up some of the power it holds atm.

    Turkey Relaxes Hijab Ban

    Secularists Rally

The vote came as tens of thousands of secularists took anew to the streets to protest the parliamentary vote, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"Turkey is secular and will remain secular," shouted the protestors, who packed a square in downtown Ankara, filling the main artery running through the heart of the city.

Television reports said there were as many as 200,000 people at the demonstration, dubbed the "Rally for Secularism and Independence".

A majority of the demonstrators, who were waving the red and white star and crescent flag of Turkey and bearing portraits of modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, were women.

    SOURCE

These countrywomen of yours clearly have more sense than you and see through the smart modern suits and weasel words of Erdogan and his revanchist crew. They know that giving women the "right" to wear hijab will empower fanatical Muslim males to coerce their wives, daughters, sisters etc etc to wear it WHETHER THEY WANT TO OR NOT.

Interesting post there.  But how to you guard against bad strongmen who want to introduce backwards measures?  How can you ensure that all strongmen are good visionaries?  (assuming of course that you are dead serious about that post)
