Of course, Billy! He is one of the greatest Egyptian writers - he is known as 'ameed al adab alaraby - the dean of arabic literature - he is loved by all Egyptians - I read his magnificeint autobiography al-ayam (The days) at university and still have it on my shelf. (btw it is rumoured that he was a secret atheist.)
He really is the greatest figure in Arab literature. In fact if it wasn't for the Nobel prize, he'd be more famous than Mahfouz.
On top of his novels, he is widely-known for his Islamic history books which are known for their unprecedented neutrality and non-bias.
I remember my religious uncle telling me how the Shia have always been prosecuted referring to Hussein's book by saying "even Taha Hussein (the Egyptian
Sunni) says this and that....etc". Of course little does my uncle know, Hussein was probably an atheist or a convert to Christianity.
