Yeah that's an unfortunate possibility. But I hold out hope that Pakistan at least will realize with time, and probably after a lot more bloodshed, that its best interests are in regional cooperation, and that a regional union will form together with other south asian countries based on cultural similarities and economic cooperation. But that won't happen while tribalism and religious fundamentalism is valued more than common humanity and common interests. Pakistan can't go and saw off its borders from India and move itself closer to Saudi Arabia, which is what some in that country would love to do. Roll Eyes

Has anyone heard of this Egyptian writer called Taha Hussein?

Of course, Billy! He is one of the greatest Egyptian writers - he is known as 'ameed al adab alaraby - the dean of arabic literature - he is loved by all Egyptians - I read his magnificeint autobiography al-ayam (The days) at university and still have it on my shelf. (btw it is rumoured that he was a secret atheist.)

I just learnt about him Hassan. I'm going to try and get some of his books and read them. Amazon doesn't have a wide variety but I've ordered his autobiography / memoir you just mentioned, 'The Days'.

    He sounds very fascinating.

    edit: wait......he was blind?

Yeah, he was blind from childhood. What a man to have achieved so much despite that disadvantage.

He really is the greatest figure in Arab literature. In fact if it wasn't for the Nobel prize, he'd be more famous than Mahfouz.

On top of his novels, he is widely-known for his Islamic history books which are known for their unprecedented neutrality and non-bias.
I remember my religious uncle telling me how the Shia have always been prosecuted referring to Hussein's book by saying "even Taha Hussein (the Egyptian Sunni) says this and that....etc". Of course little does my uncle know, Hussein was probably an atheist or a convert to Christianity.

btw if anyone is learning Arabic then I strongly urge you to use Ta Ha Hussein's book as an example of beautiful classical Arabic - it is written in the most amazing and beautiful style - very brief wording yet so smooth and full of meaning and allusions - it flows like silk - truly stunning.

That book in itself destroys the challenge of the Qur'an as it is more beautiful, more profound and more precisely worded!

    Noam Chomsky:

It's not radical Islam that worries the US – it's independence

A common refrain among pundits is that fear of radical Islam requires (reluctant) opposition to democracy on pragmatic grounds. While not without some merit, the formulation is misleading. The general threat has always been independence. The US and its allies have regularly supported radical Islamists, sometimes to prevent the threat of secular nationalism.

A familiar example is Saudi Arabia, the ideological centre of radical Islam (and of Islamic terror). Another in a long list is Zia ul-Haq, the most brutal of Pakistan's dictators and President Reagan's favorite, who carried out a programme of radical Islamisation (with Saudi funding).

After reading the articles about how Iran and Egypt seem to be the odd countries within the Muslim world because of their history and sense of self-identity, I found this comment on a YouTube video by an Iranian that I thought seemed to fit quite well with the articles posted previously:

MEMBERS of Anglican congregations in Cairo and elsewhere in Egypt are safe and unharmed, despite the unprecedented unrest that the country is experiencing. The cathedral is being protected by Muslim youths.

On Tuesday evening, President Hosni Mubarak promised further political reforms, and said that he would not seek re-election in September. Egypt remains tense, however. Anglicans there are asking fellow Christians overseas to pray for them and for a peaceful outcome to the crisis.

This is the plain clothes police targeting and grabbing Wael Ghonim - uprovoked.

Wael Ghonim one of the main facebook/twitter activists and Egypt Google executive.

He has been missing now for a week and no-one knows what's happened to him.

Interview with leader of the revolutionaries on the rooftops.  Gives a better idea of how/why the protests are well organized even though commands don't from a central leader.

In 25 years of writing about public affairs and news TV, I have seen very few Sunday-morning, on-the-news, roundtable talks that could compare with the one Christiane Amanpour led Sunday on "This Week" from Cairo.
