But the suspect, it seems, is no pure nationalist. Instead, he is said to be a right-wing extremist of the kind that police authorities in the West have feared for some time.

Their fear has been heightened by the potentially explosive mix of economic recession and unemployment, increasing racism and an ever stronger anti-Muslim sentiment, according to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

This is similar to the conditions which led to the rise of Nazism last century. This was not as much of an aberration as people like to think it was. People are still fundamentally the same animals, as ample evidence from various parts of the world (including Europe) has shown since then.

    Quote
But at the same time, aspects of the far-right agenda have risen to greater prominence on the mainstream political arena, with Expo reporting how the revulsion displayed by the Swedish people during the 1990s is increasingly turning towards a curiosity about toned-down far-right rhetoric.

Similar sentiments have been felt in Norway, where politicians have openly been voicing concerns about how the country's culture might be diluted by immigration from countries with different religions and values.

This isn't surprising either. Muslim immigrants in many places have been giving themselves a bad name. Not all of them of course, but enough of them to make a difference.

Following the attacks in Oslo and on Utoeya, it will be interesting to see whether many in the country develop a more sophisticated view of where the greatest threats are coming from, amid a growing realisation that extremism is deadly regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion.

This. I never trust people who are proud of the purity of their ideology, whatever it happens to be.

I find it hard not to worry that the nightmare has arrived in full now.

The mobilisation of a terrorist, murderous far-right in Europe is something I have worried about for a long, long time.

Hey, Europe has survived that already umpteen times. Wink

The shithouse was an admirer of the EDL and communicated with some members online:

Lets face it, he knew exactly what they were and are all about.

Interesting quote there. Of course, SIOE and the EDL will deny it all strenuously............

He was active on a Nordic Neo-Nazi website with 22000 members (!).

Yup a pro-gay, pro-Israel, anti-socialist neonazi who dislikes multiculturalism. Couldn't make this up. Although to be fair with the exception of being a neonazi, his ideology is very similar to Geert Wilders', a man that this maniac has praised.

Could the prime minister's decision to support Palestinian statehood have been what triggered him to kill all these people?

Hey, Europe has survived that already umpteen times. Wink

I know Os, its just the poison that will seep out as the ideologues enact their lunacies that depresses and worries me. Bad atmospherics, distrust, economic recession, belligerent extremism.

Its not the destination I'm worried about. The destination of the extremists will never be reached. Whether of the far-right, or of the Islamists,  thats not the problem. The problem is the damage they do in the cause of reaching that impossible destination for them. And we're seeing that happening now, and I wish I could say it will get better.

I can neither see Islamist extremism receding, nor the far-right in the immediate future.

More and more horrific details are coming from the events on the island. Apparently five or six young children, the youngest being no more than 7 were on the island and a survivor reported seeing at least two of them being shot. Absolutely sickening.

Anders said in interrogations he thought his own actions were horrific but necessary. He has also requested to be allowed to speak to the public in a court hearing on Monday, but I don't know if they are going to allow it. (In his manifest he wrote that he wanted to be caught as the first phase in some sort of propaganda).

Also the entire business around the manifest he wrote is extremely disturbing. I expect more on that will hit the international media tomorrow.

The guy has written a manifesto in which he talks about a war between Europeans and Muslims. This journalist has read through it:

    http://twitter.com/#!/blakehounshell

He talks about mass killing of the 'traitors' of Europe, and other depraved shit.

Has distributed this to other 'patriots' giving technical advice on how to assassinate, bomb and kill.

    Quote
Wow: "we should… not exceed (per 2010) aprox. 45 000 dead and 1 million wounded cultural Marxists/multiculturalists in Western Europe."

Claims to be part of a group of 'Knights' who decided on this action and ideology. Meaning, if true, there are more out there who associated and supported him.

Had been planning this for 9 years.

He hates Muslims and views 'Christian' Europe as locked in a struggle with Islam.

He aims to bring about a 'revolution' and foment this war by killing the 'traitors' of the Marxist / Multicultural Left who have betrayed Europe.

He even dicusses the 'morality' of using nuclear weapons procured from a rogue state in order to enact this.

He gives technical and logistical information on how 'patriots' can murder and assassinate 'traitors'

He discusses how many will need to be killed in order to enact the awakening of Europeans against the cultural Marxists.

He admires Al Qaeda training manuals for their precision.

His primary hatred and target are Europeans who have betrayed their people - the mass killing and war between Europeans and Muslims will take place later - the priority for the time being is to kill as many politicians and others who peddle Left wing theories.

The Labour party prime minister was taregtted and the Labour party children because only something as shocking as this could 'penetrate' the 'censorship' that prevents the realisation of European patriotism to the masses.

Killing the youth on the island is neseccary for the 'greater good'

Just coming to that Os. He talked about forming alliances with Islamists in Europe but counted against it, but not before admitting that they 'share the same goal'.

    Quote
An alliance with the Jihadists might prove beneficial to both parties but will simply be too dangerous (and might prove to be ideologically counter-productive). We both share one common goal. They want control over their own countries in the Middle East and we want control of our own countries in Western Europe. A future cultural conservative European regime will deport all Muslims from Europe and isolate the Muslim world. As a result, the Islamists will gain the necessary momentum to retake power in several countries: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, Oman, Algeria, Morocco and a few others.

Its a veritable pit of snakes, his mind. He views himself, and his associates, as ancient Christian European knights, preparing ground for a holy war against Islam and the 'traitors' in Europe who are holding down European consciousness.

He speaks plainly about how 'warriors' will have to kill thousands in cold blood, urging other warriors not to be inhibited from executing women, because a feminised Europe is a weak Europe.

So far, he only speaks of a future war between Europeans and Muslims - I have not noted yet a direct incitement to attack and kill Muslims in the present. His 'strategy' such as it is, is to kill and assassinate as many European 'traitors' to prepare the way for this to happen. He detests and hates those who he believes have 'betrayed' Europeans.

This is a manifesto for terrorism, pure and simple. The mirroring of jihadi ideology is blatant.

Also, I have fears that other components in his crew are out there, plotting to do the same. Other 'knights' are (he claims) from all over Europe, including the UK.

Well they weren't onto this bugger.

Thing is though that given the number of loonies who think like this one, we have remarkably few instances of them actually acting effectively. Without going to a full on police state there are practical limits to what can be done about the problem. The reality is that every so often one of them will slip through the cracks if you want to live in an open society.

Os, this guy was completely off the radar. The chilling thing about the 'manifesto' is that so much of it consists of technical, logistical things about how to kill and carry out terrorist attacks and 'executions'. Like the al Qaeda handbook that is downloaded and referenced be jehadis. Shit like this can activate psychos who are sleeping.

Uhm, there's nothing wrong at all with that responce at all. I don't know if you understand it or not, but blowing things up and killing people is an attack on the democratic institutions, you can't have a stable society like that.

How so, Prince? You're bloody stupid if you think he was being trigger-happy because what he said was fundementally correct, that using violence / fear / blowing people to pieces IS an attack on democracy.

Tell me how the responce was incorrect?

Tell me how you feel this is not an attack on democracy?

All that matters is that it was an attack on democracy, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with what the Norweigan Prime Minister said. I don't see how he was being trigger-happy.

I'd like to know how the Norwegian authorities will deal with this guy. A European style legal system (no death penalty, no full isolation) is not fit for purpose if you are dealing with an ideologue who wishes to martyr himself.

I'm still mostly hearing reports calling him a "Christian fundamentalist" - which seems overly reductionist as a description.  How this interacts with the rest of the Wilders/EDL type politicians will be interesting: "We support his aims, but not his methods"?
