Oh man, this video. I have gotten so many headaches seeing it posted all over facebook and the subsequent Muslim pep-rallies that follow. I agree wholeheartedly with many of the points made in this thread.
1- We don't know what was not included in the final cut. I'm sure we've all seen the videos where a handful of halfwits are interviewed on the streets who don't know the first thing about Geography and therefore ALL Americans are halfwits. In fact, the whole "therefore factor" (as I like to call it) is one of the biggest gripes I have with dogmatic people. (Women shouldn't be nude, therefore Islam. I don't understand science, therefore God. I'm uncomfortable with sex, therefore hijab.)
2- How is this in any way a good sample representing the world's population? A handful of ~20 year old douchebag bros and bumbling blondes on a college campus? Give me a break.
3- There isn't even a clear cut understanding and well defined and accepted meaning of what "friendship" is, at least in this context. At what point does the friendship become invalidated by someone's thought? Is it only sexual thoughs that invalidate friendships? How do they even invalidate friendships in the first place? What if the dude isn't attracted to the girl, but the girl is attracted to the guy?
4- This video further demonizes man as a dirty vile creature with rape and violence composing 95% of his mental capacity, only kept in check by the strong arm of the law; and also creates the woman as the naive bumblimg bimbo, oblivious to the world around her and ready to do a quick nip-slip to the professor if it means getting an extra 5 points to pass undergraduate English.
5- I may be off here, but I feel that things like this only further drive point number 4 into everyone's head and especially since Allah said so, it must be true. Eventually, man DOES become some sort of mental serial rapist and creates for himself this necessity to be segregated from women. The virtues of self control, discipline, and morality are stripped away so that we become convinced of our imaginary disease and ask for the imaginary cure.
6- These black and white situations offer no room for exception, and even within these exceptions it brings into question the true motives of all parties involved, including the self.
7- Then there is the whole issue of taking the easy quick fix, rather than just telling men not to rape women in the first place. (But Allah created the men to have these rapist impulses, so how is it our place to question the nature of his creation
)
