Perhaps some here will tell you it does do some good - but in my experience is only pisses people off and makes any valid criticisms of Islam fly right over most Muslims head.

I think people need to ask themselves is their aim to simply to vent their disgust, anger and score points - or do they really want to try and make the world a better place by reaching people?

This is not about venting disgust Hassan, this is about calling a spade a spade. I have previously stated that avoiding the label "pedophile" for diplomatic reasons can be acceptable, but denying a simple fact so as not to "alienate Muslims" is outright dishonest.

Mohammad's pedophilia is a very valid criticism of Islam.

Bwhahahahaha! This is the internet, brother-- what do you think? Smiley The vast majority of people on ANY internet forum who profess to be "fighting for" or "fighting against" this or that thing are just a bunch of cranks whining online who's activism rarely goes beyond their keyboard, and when it does, is completely ineffectual or even counterproductive. This seems to be universally true, regardless of the belief system of the person posting. Not to say there aren't any people online who are making a difference in the real world, but speaking for myself, these forums are just a place to satisfy some intellectual curiosity, flex my brain and debating skills a bit and otherwise shoot the shit/kill time.

Yes, I have to say I agree with you.

Okay, good points, but I guess I've just never understood the obsession some people have with this topic-- do people think that shouting "Mohammed was a pedo!" all over the internet is going to lead to millions of Muslims saying "You know, they're right-- we should dump/reform this bullshit religion!"? Seems to me that attacking the holiest prophet of a religion is very unlikely to lead to the necessary reforms of that religion-- in fact, it seems the opposite is likely. Has there been a single internet post of this type (of the undoubtedly millions on the internet) that has done one single thing to improve the status of women, homosexuals, religious minorities, atheists and other non-conformers in the Muslim world? It's easy to become overwhelmed by the scale of the problem, but that fact is that individuals always make the choice to follow a man like Muhammad. You can convince them 1 by 1 with these polemics, and yes, I've seem some defenders of Islam become convinced.

No, in that regard, I have done absolutely nothing. Well, maybe that's not entirely true, I did bring some union brothers and sisters to an event with Iraqi union activists/IFC members. But other than that, no.

A couple of things to keep in mind when discussing stuff with me...

    1) I really don't care much what people I encounter online are doing offline unless it involves giving me money or a BJ. As I said above, I'm just here to shoot the shit.

    2) I was born with a very specific and rare birth defect that prevents me from feeling shame for the most part, especially amongst people who are not family or close friends. Smiley

Nah, that's okay...I'll continue to pronounce general judgments upon people I've never met...you see, this is the beauty of the internet and, I believe, a major reason why most of us spend time here. Mohammed's paedophilia is like any other subject which can cause offense, hurt, denial, etc to other people.  IOW, it depends how it is approached - sure you can behave like an idiot running round shouting about paedo Mo, but if you get any response at all it will just turn into a slanging match.  Or you can take the cowardly route and not mention it at all, because its a "sensitive" subject.  Or you can approach it in a calm, rational and diplomatic manner, and if your listener is intelligent and honest you will get through to him.  I've come across several ex-muslims who quoted that as one of the reasons, (although not the only one),  which gave them second thoughts about their religion.  For example.....

    Quote from: Hassan
I remember one conversation I had in particular. They were discusing aisha being 9. I knew there were contray hadiths and stuff, but I decided I wasn't going to get into all that I would accept that she was 9, but I tried to argue that this was a different time and this was acceptable then. Someone then asked me "Do you think it is acceptable now" I had to be honest and say no. I was actually teaching a class of 9 year-olds in Islamia school and I knew none of those little kids were ready for marriage in any way.

The person then said then Muhammad cannot be an example for all times and all places can he.

I simply had no answer - he was right - end of story.

Yes, and I have always said it is an important subject as regards Islam's claim that Muhammad is the perfect example for all time and all places.

But like you say it should be raised intelligently.

There's this hadith in Sahih Bukhari, the most famous collection of hadiths.
    Volume 7, Book 62, Number 16:

    Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:

While we were returning from a Ghazwa (Holy Battle) with the Prophet, I started driving my camel fast, as it was a lazy camel A rider came behind me and pricked my camel with a spear he had with him, and then my camel started running as fast as the best camel you may see. Behold! The rider was the Prophet himself. He said, 'What makes you in such a hurry?" I replied, I am newly married " He said, "Did you marry a virgin or a matron? I replied, "A matron." He said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you may play with her and she with you?"

Why did Mohammed even recommend virgin girls rather than matrons, the benefit of marrying a "virgin" being that she might play with him? This language is slightly disturbing to say the least.  Tongue

World renowned historian Will Durant"...the Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown..."

I think you are missing the main point of this story. The lesson is not about marrying virgins. The moral is that camels are lazy, so if you are in a big hurry to get home and bang your wife, you should get a horse, or better yet a Dodge Charger.

Cheesy Regardless of whether I'm missing the main point of the story or not, the story doesn't end there in this particular hadith, it continues. The next part which I hadn't quoted  is in bold.

When we were about to enter (Medina), the Prophet said, "Wait so that you may enter (Medina) at night so that the lady of unkempt hair may comb her hair and the one whose husband has been absent may shave her pubic region.

Camels are more conveninet than horses in many desert climates, & with the next part of the story, we can even conclude that the Prophet thought that its wrong to bang wives who haven't shaved their pubic regions!  Wink

Course, these issues might not even arise if the bride is a 9 year old like Ayesha.  Tongue

Many of our criticisms of Islam are based on information gleaned from narrations where the important information was only tangential to the topic. Ibn Kathir's commentary about dolls and puberty is another example.

In fact the Koran mentions sexual relations with pre-pubescent wives just in passing.

This kind of harmful behaviour was normalized for Muhammad and his companions, so they didn't make a big deal out of it.

Bukhari book 62 (Kitab an-Nikah) number 16 has the "shaving" story, no. 17 is more to the point and just says:

    Quote
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: When I got married, Allah's Apostle said to me, "What type of lady have you married?" I replied, "I have married a matron' He said, "Why, don't you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?" Jabir also said: Allah's Apostle said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?'

200 posts, and no Muslims have replied.

But not by themselves on an anti-Islam forum. They will just think we are misguided and this site is full of bigots.

Yep that's the problem with debating online, no matter how convincing your argument is, many will always blindly ignore you as misguided or hateful.

Plus you can't really debate in real life due to other reasons.

Sometimes I think it's futile to care.

Cheesy Regardless of whether I'm missing the main point of the story or not, the story doesn't end there in this particular hadith, it continues. The next part which I hadn't quoted  is in bold.

I replied, "A matron." He said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you may play with her and she with you?" When we were about to enter (Medina), the Prophet said, "Wait so that you may enter (Medina) at night so that the lady of unkempt hair may comb her hair and the one whose husband has been absent may shave her pubic region.

Did you miss out a part of that hadith? The one I read didn't mention that bold bit, mine carried on from the question asked before the bold bit.

I didn't miss out, I was hesitant because of the soft porn nature of this part. I also didn't get what it meant when I read this about a year back...

World renowned historian Will Durant"...the Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown..."

In that case there is a separate hadith very similar to that but with a different ending. And don't worry about soft porn, I've posted much worse than that quite openly on here before Tongue

I admire your pessimism but I am yet to fail, first comes the failure, then comes the pessimism. I need to experience the failure myself first!
