No I don't but it's not that far.
I've been to Manchester many many times. In fact I was there 2 weeks ago. I also spent my '05 summer holiday in Sale, Cheshire and used to take the bus to Picadilly everyday.
I was lucky enough to attend a Man Utd match in Old Trafford. Sir Alex was literally 20 feets away. I could hear what he saying. Not that I understood any of it  Cheesy
Try this one first "Ali Baba":
    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?hl=en&safe=off&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=ali+baba+restaurant+manchester&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=ali+baba+restaurant&hnear=manchester&cid=11111171924650094876

It's an Iraqi Restaurant run by Iraqi Kurds. All of their food is lovely but I recommend the Sheesh Lamb Kebab. Also ask if they have any "Liban"=Iraqi yoghurt. Please put in mind that:
1-It's called "Ali Baba" NOT "Kurdistan". Kurdistan is another Iraqi restaurant just around the corner and also run by Kurds but it's very cheap and their food tastes like shit. While Ali Baba is newly-refurbished and has great service.
2-You access it from the main road (Wilmslow Rd.) not from the side road. And it's on the 1st floor so you're gonna have to go upstairs. (I just wanna make sure you don't go to the wrong one)
    3-Contact details: Ali Baba, 100 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, Lancashire M14 5AJ  Tel:0161 248 5588‎

IA - do you know if this place is still open, as I was planning on going there tonight, but the phone number is not working?

lol... Well Kebabs are one thing the Arabs do very well - in fact I would say no one barbecues/roasts meat better than the Lebanese.

Best Lamb Kebab (some times called Tikka or shikaf) is the Syrian

Best kofta kebab is the Iraqi

IA - do you know if this place is still open, as I was planning on going there tonight, but the phone number is not working?

I was there in Feb. so I would be very surprised if it's not open.

Like I said IsLame, order the lamb kebab that looks like the 2nd picture above NOT the 1st picture. The Iraqi nomenclature differs from the Mediterranean (what we call kebab they call kofta and they call kebab we call Tikka) one so it's best to look at the pics in the menu. Or if you want try the Qoozi (lamb on rice).
And let me know what you think.

    Just ate this.

Really liked the people & atmosphere there.  Found the food was excellent quality, but not my type of cuisine.  Ive got a desi tongue, so need a little more flavour although it was obvious it was well made.  Meat was juicy, the nan was light & perfect

    Yum  Smiley

Chorizo, pepper, courgette and red chilli pasta with mixed salad for lunch:

For dinner, kebab in flatbread (kind of, I rolled it out a bit thicker than I intended to) with mayo, ketchup, cucumber and lettuce:

Pardon the poor quality in last shot

Glad you liked it and I know what you mean by "desi tongue". You guys focus on flavors and spices more than we do.

And you're right, they do have great nan:

Yeah thats the kind of nan I like.

I hate this quasi western thick stodgey nan invention that you get in lots of restaurants & takeaways these days.

For me, I still dont think anything comes close to the good old home-cooked chappatti

Would you believe my mum made great chappatis - taught by a Pakistani friend - we had them hot off the special pan she had - with butter - folded into quarters - butter drizzling down - before being packed off to school... lol

I didn't notice the name change tbh. I did notice it's been refurbished and redecorated though. Oh and they used to have an open-buffet with many rice-based Iraqi dishes, they no longer do sadly. So yeah it could very well be new management.

BTW, that kebab looks delicious, how come you didn't like it?

Its just a personal preference and I'm a fussy eater.  It needed more spice & chilli and less oil imo.  Like I said, it was very well made though along with the nan.

Didnt see any of that.  They had the meat for carving, and salad, and arabic deserts.  I ordered them too, and I normally like them.  Again they were well made and fresh, but too much cinnamon and the taste of the cinnamon took over the taste of all the deserts.

I cant believe they used to have an open buffet- thats the way it.  They normally are more home-made and you can pick & choose a variety of dishes.  Do you know any place I can go to try Iraqi buffets?

Yeah they used to have a buffet and it was just £8 ! They did all the dishes including 2 types of biryani (chicken and lamb), Qoozi, Dolma, Tabsi Baytinjan... basically every dish in these posts and then some other:

I'm not sure I know any buffets but if you are ever in London and would like to try Iraqi smoked carp (Masgoof) this is a very good specialty restaurant:

    http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/restaurants/restaurant-9071.php
http://www.masgouf.com/home.html (apparently website still under construction)

(**go there only if you want to try the Masgoof. Don't order any grill there, they do great Masgoof but they should stick to it IMO)
Oh and it's relatively expensive, a smoked carp enough for 2 with rice, appetizers and drinks can set you back £50-60

    Some pics of Masgoof:

Here is how it is made:

But you're not allowed to eat Watermelon because according to Hanbal, there was no evidence that Muhammad ate it lol

If we go by his logic, than 99% of the foods you would see at your grocery store are not allowed. I don't think Muhammad ate broccoli, ice cream, apples, or whole wheat bread lol.

I can't cook unless it involves deep frying. Or shallow frying.  :(

Hmm, I need to learn to cook, don't want to have to live off 8p Asda noodles all the way through uni.

Don't feel bad IsLame. Check what I have eaten and you will cheer up:

A Subway 6" Italian BMT with a chocolate chip muffin a Sprite for breakfast (12 pm). A large bacon cheese Whopper meal from BK for dinner + 6 mini pancakes with syrup as a dessert grin12 (7 pm). And now I'm having some shortbread fingers with iced tea. Not to mention the fuckload of cigarettes.

Very unhealthy day for me. Although I was on the road all day so it's not a typical day.
