Kaff, I think using Wordpress will be the easiest way to get started. Wordpress is a blogging tool and the best for this kind of stuff IMO because you can also add categories etc to it, Joomla is also a possibility but Wordpress is simpler and the best tool for this site IMO. Wordpress also has a lot of free templates available with good designs that can be used. I can install wordpress on the site for you if you want, and when you select which theme/template you want to use, I can install that too

Then you basically go into the admin of wordpress and post new articles for every question, its fairly simple.

The following site has got lots of good templates which are free:
    http://wordpressthemesbase.com/

If you do want I can code a page for you where visitors can submit their questions and have them stored in a database or emailed to someone, whichever you'd prefer.

Let me know if you need any more help. I'd love for this site to be launched, it won't be too nice for it to just sit here and us to never get started!  Cheesy

Yeah, I'm not interested in Joomla much right now either. I think I'll install wordpress, the service has it in the tools option too. Lemme see if I can do it now.

Not really, lots of work to do. I want this one to be good! The thing I published so far is just Blackdog's bit that I just pasted into the index page.

Thanks for the tips Liberated! The only publishing tools I've used is Joomla! and Dreamweaver (which Im not good at!). I'll have to look through some other options for and web designs to see what direction we should go. If any of you have web design experience and are interested in helping out we'd love to get some help. I'm a pretty much a novice at this shit.

I have a bit of experience (I've used Dreamweaver a lot, never used Joomla but I've used a different CMS before). I'll try to help as much as I'm able to, I have coursework to do too so make as much use of the next few days of me as you want.

The best way to start is to think of what exactly this website will consist of. Are we just going to have the one page? Or will we be accepting submissions from visitors too?

Once you've figured that out, come up with a general layout for the website. I can try and help out with this, I need to brush up my skills on using divs.

I would recommend that we stick to using CSS for formatting right from the beginning as it's easier to change everything around when we change our minds on the layout/styles.

We need someone who is good on photoshop if we want a good banner. I'm not very creative with it any more, I'm sure there are others here who are good with ideas.

If you're good with CSS then you can look at free CSS templates here: http://www.csszengarden.com/

Thanks Peruvian, if you're too busy even advice and some guidance would be great.  Afro

I guess trying to figure out what the site should consist of should be the first step. I guess we'd keep it pretty simple layout layout at first. We could also maybe try to mimic sites like islamqa and askimam for parody purposes, just a thought.

I'll take a look at those CSS templates, that looks like a nice site. Does Wordpress use CSS? Sorry if I sound like a n00b, lol.

Also I just installed wordpress, seemed to work http://ask-allah.com/

I don't think wordpress would work for a site like this, it would restrict organisation too much. That's my personal opinion though. It might work out, I just prefer to have the freedom to do what I want with it.

I guess I cant talk since my skills don't match up to wordpress's styles Tongue

That's no prob, this thing is hardly past the brainstorming stages. I think wordpress is better for blogs myself, and Joomla is too restrictive imo. So what do you suggest? I think given how simple this site will be at first we could just create our own page on dreamweaver.

What about a basic 3 column layout with a banner on top? The fatwa sites you mentioned work this way. We can build on it as we go along. I'm sure other web designers here can provide some tips/code too.

I think it would be a cool idea to have parody quotes on the site (eg. Join our religion of love and peace or we'll kill you). We could have random ones rotating around, should be quite easy to do this. We could add it to the 3rd column.

I think it would work, all we're doing is posting articles, no? Wordpress has got categories etc.

IMO dreamweaver is not a good idea, we should use something with a database to store all the questions etc. If you guys don't want to use wordpress, I can code up a simple system hooked with a database for posting the questions and we can use one of the CSS templates that peru posted for the design.

Well considering it's your site you should use whichever is most comfortable for you. The reason I was questioning wordpress was because I didn't see it as a blog site, I'm looking at it as a fatwa site. Not sure how you want it though. I guess wordpress could workout, I haven't used it a huge amount.

If you wanna use dreamweaver then I can help with the designing stages this weekend, it shouldn't take too long to get the basic design up. We can add prettiness to it at a later stage (that shouldn't take too long itself either).

If you think so then I guess there's no harm in trying. I was just looking at it from a different point of view.

I guess it depends on what Kaff wants the site to do which will dictate if we should use Wordpress or a custom-built system which I can code up in a day or two.  How do you see it working Kaff?

Hey liberated, do you have some good example sites that have used wordpress? Is it easy to change the graphics, does it use css?

The quotes idea is great, maybe it could be a random text up top, below the banner?

There does seem to be a random quotes plugin for wordpress:

But I'm not sure if it works or not/how well it works

This is a popular blog which uses Wordpress:
    http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/

No graphics can't be easily changed like in dreamweaver or so, but I can change them for you whenever you need it. Or if you learn a bit of HTML you could change them yourself.

Graphics are just ftp for images and maybe some tweaking of css. No big deal. Wordpress coding is bloody nasty. Would suggest using something lighter and cleaner unless you really need Wordpress.

OK, I can code a simple system for the site if you guys want? For the design either Peru could make one or we could use one of the free ones available. It will make things more flexible for anything we want to add to the site in the future such as random quotes etc. Your web space can run PHP and MySQL, right Kaff? Let me know what versions its got for both if you can.

What do you guys think about if under the top banner we had a large textbox and a button saying 'Ask allah'. If you typed in a question like 'How do I get rich?' or 'Should I divorce my wife' it would show a message like 'Searching my divine knowledge' and then it would show all the questions that are relavant to what you asked? I can code this.. I have an algorithm in mind which can be done for this.

Also perhaps it could have a page advocating muslims to leave Islam too? In a satrical way like 'Why you shouldn't believe in me' or such

Slow down guys, don't wanna make the project too big at the beginning stages otherwise it'll never work out.

By the looks of things you seem more talented then me Wink I was just thinking of working on a simple layout and letting others add to it themselves.

How about making the site a 'no hold barred' approach to Islam.  Like Wrestling vs. Cage Fighting. A sort of everything you wanted to sy on COEM but were afraid to do so, particularly as we wont be held to CEMB ruls or constraints.

P.S Kafirist, you might also wish to add the link to this site in your sig

I'm not at all good at designing sites, I can only do the programming work. I suck at things like picking colors, designing the graphics etc. You're better for doing that, you can just design the template and if Kaff wants I can do the programming work for letting people send in their questions, view the different questions, etc.

Or if you're busy we could use one of the free templates.
