Are you kidding Kenan??? Ali was far from racist and chauvinistic. He was loved by people whether they were men, women, black, white, yellow or purple. And today he is still a hero to many people regardless of race, religion, or age. Everyone knows who he is and everyone (well most people at least) loves him.

He is truly a universal figure.

Want me to give you a few quotes?

    @abuyunus2 and @Hassan

Muhammad Ali definitely is a great sportsman but some of his views – especially the ones he used to openly proclaim back in the ’60 and ’70 always troubled me. They just seems so partial, simplistic even racist and chauvinistic. I do understand that he was a man of his time and that he definitely did experience racism of that era however imho one’s true greatness is shown precisely in the ability to overcome such difficulties and in the ability to become a truly universal figure.

I must have missed those - but I guess we have all said and done things we regret.
  • Re: You Can't Leave Islam!

Yeah we all know he said a few things that he shouldn't have done. But bottom line, most people understood him and understood where those emotions were coming from. He was well liked throughout the world by white people as well as black people and by Christians as well as Muslims. His general attitude to people of other races and religions was actually very warm and tolerant and that's why people liked him - the things he sometimes said were for political reasons and people understood that.

Till this day he is still a hero to many people regardless of their race, religion or age. The man is a universal figure and will always be a legend.

He hit people for a living and talked shit in the process. I'm sure there are better role models out there.

    sportsmen idolization = FAIL

Ali was more than just a sportsman, but it's ok if some people fail to realise that (although a bit sad in my books). And nothing wrong in having heroes.

Ye he was one of the greatest boxers of all time though.

I think he is a Sufi Muslim now, if I am not mistaken?

The man is a universal figure ..

I happen to disagree. And have very good reason for that.

It is true however that he did grow as a person and his position shifted from Malcolm X type nationalism/chauvinism/racism all the way to even Sufism in the recent years but facts are facts.

For example I would never ever say that all Muslims are bad and that they hate “white people”. Nor would I ever say that no intelligent white man or white woman in his or her right white mind wants black/Muslim/Jewish/etc. boys and black/Muslim/Jewish/etc. girls coming to their homes to marry their white sons and daughters. And I am just a simple nobody.

I think there was one article where his daughter said he had become interested in sufism a few years ago, but I'm not exactly sure.

    Is this sarcasm?
Do you mean nonsense as in "non-factual" or nonsense as in "I don't like it"?

Ali's religious beliefs at the time included the notion that the white man was "the devil" and that white people were not "righteous." Ali claimed that white people hated black people.

To be fair that's standard NOI beliefs - I'm sure Ali regrets that - he certainly seems to have come a long way since then.

I sure hope that you are right. But imho that is exactly the difference beteewn a truly univerally great man and a great sportsman whose intelectual capacity sometimes betrayed him. If he was truly great he should have known better. And there are many examples. One of my idols - Martin Luther King, Jr. – being one of them.

I'm not disputing what Ali said. I know he said those things as did the rest of the world, but most people understood where his emotions were coming from at that time. Like I said if you don't like him, fine. But millions of others admired him for the man he was and what he stood for. He is and will always be a hero to millions around the world regardless of race, religion or age.

I agree.  I'm no one special, but I followed islam, and still didn't think or say stupid things about kaffirs, homosexuals, or anything else islam wanted me to be nasty about.

To say a thing is to believe it, even a little, to say it with the passion he put behind it each time, is to believe it quite deeply, and that's the measure of a man.

Ye, Nation of Islam turned him into a racist. However, like Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X realised the error of his ways. I think it was when he went to Hajj, his views about white people changed. I would have thought though being an intellectual guy , X would have realised that without Islam but American society was openly racist during the 60's and 70's - shaped his views on white people.
