    "RETARD"

That word bugs me.  It appears to be used commonly over in the States & Canada, but is not used so much here in the UK.  Its actually making fun of mentally retarded people (through no fault of their own), so not sure why anyone would want to use it.

Can anyone see what I mean?

No lol although it should, but it doesn't.  I do use it IRL.  It just slips out like most swear words do, out of my sailor mouth. 015

I see your point though, and this same word was debated on the other forum I use, alot of people didn't like it either.

"Faggot". Never liked the word. It's obviously used to describe something effeminate or someone gay; and it's obviously used as a way of looking down on someone. Just a filthy and derogatory term...

Couldn't care about "gay" because it's so mainstream and acceptable that even gay people say it. It doesn't have anything to do with sexuality when it is used in a lot of sentences.

I didnt know that, but I haven'tnoticed you doing it.  I guess its one of those words that is so popularly used in other cultures, that they have become immune to what they are actually saying.

I dont mind taking the piss out of people, but using the word retard for stupid people is actually making fun out of someone elses disability, something that they wish they had and nature had the misfortune to be presented with by nature.

Must be hard enough being accepted as is, without people using their disability as another word for stupidity.

Drives me mad, I swear, makes my blood boil when these words get used gratuitously.

Guys, I do hope that you realize that what a word means depends both on what it is being used to do and the context in which it is employed. The context explains the real meaning of an expression used in particular circumstances.

Meaning cannot be divorced from the activities and behaviour of language users, which both reflect and explain the meaning of our words.

I use retard as well in real life, but only in a playful manner (which of course don't exactly make it right). It's usually aimed at my cousins who I am very close to.

Cultural differences have to be taken into account as well I think. For example when Australia are playing Pakistan at cricket, the Australian press refer to them as "the pakis" because it is not a racist word over there. Similarly the words "retard" and "handicapped" are not really considered offensive in America whereas in Britain they are

I'm from the UK, and retard is used a bit amongst my friends.

I don't see it as offensive because, like kenan pointed out, it's the context.

I have used it online, to be offensive though, but normally when I laugh and call my brother a retard, it's no different from me calling him a wasteman.

I should add, to me whores/sluts is more offensive.

When a male member here says he likes whores/sluts, the context is the same as saying "I like retards, they are so easy to use because they are so stupid"

Infact there isn't any friendly context that would ever lessen the offence of that word to me.  I have even slapped a close friend in the face once for calling me that, and usually you have to hit me first for me to hit back, or at least appear to go for me.  Those are words that bring out violence in me.   wacko

I thought the context is that you are disparaging somebody by relating them to somebody that has an unfortunate & awful impediment?  Rather than helping, arent we instead laughing at them?

If not, what is the context?

I agree of course, I shouldn't be using it for those reasons, it's just something I use without thinking it through properly.

But then, my brother calls his friend "dumb nigger", (I wouldn't) it's just words we have all become too comfortable using without thought.

The context is in the situation.

When I wrote "A retard I know IRL." I meant that this particular guy is acting like somebody who has IQ of a Goldfish. Even though he probably is of an average intelligence.

On the other hand I would never use word "retard" regardless of a context when I am talking to somebody who for example has a child with learning difficulties.

But then, my brother calls his friend "dumb nigger" ...

Believe it or not calling somebody a nigger can be a sign of affection and closeness.
There is a Nigerian guy at work I really like and often call “mah nigga”, “Kunta Kinte”, “Toby” and such and he calls me “whitey” and we both know that this is a joke only.
On the other hand I have a good Pakistani friend I never call “paki” even though I know that he wouldn’t mind. I am just not comfortable with it for some reason.

Do you think/does you conscience tell you its ok?

Of course. I wouldn't have used it otherwise.
I just don't see how that in this particular context can be seen as derogatory towards people with learning difficulties.

I use all those words on-line and IRL. Though it depends on who I'm with.

    EDIT:

And yes I've used the "nigga" a lot in real life, mainly as a term of endearment. Obviously I don't use it anymore since I'm over the age of 17 for a while now. Never use the term "nigger" though, thats just racist.

Why is this context ok and the other is wrong?

Look I dont think its up to me to give you a moral lesson on it.  Calling somebody an ethiopian, if they are skinny.  Calling somebody a spastic or a spas if they have a strange walk or hand gestures.  If you cant see it, and its right for you then continue to do so.

You're not alone, and I guess I will just have to learn to grin & bear it.  grin12

What?  Stupid people are not all mentally challenged.  When you are using the word retarded that is specifically what you want it to mean.
