Will they allow a referendum on changing the vote system?

Will they allow a referendum on changing the vote system?

The Conservatives are offering a referendum on the AV system. Labour is offering AV right off the bat. Better than nothing, but I think the Lib Dems should squeeze both parties a little harder for STV. It's now or never.

Why are they afraid of STV?

They'd lose a ton of seats.

What's the difference with that and AV? I thought they'd still lose a ton of seats?

Not really. The BBC explains it better than I could:

I think the convention is to have an election pretty soon after a hung parliament in order to ensure stable government, as it's pretty easy for a weak coalition to be defeated in a vote of no confidence. I'm not an expert, so I'm probably wrong, but that's how I've understood it.
I'm a member of a British public, am I not? This is just how I see things. Of course, other individuals can speak for themselves.

No, I think you're right.  Makes sense.  Although they cant be so sure of winning again, so seems a bit of a risk.  Depends on where the opinion polls are at the time, so a little premature for the media to be assuming there will be another election shortly.  But then thats the media I suppose.

No doubt. His career as Labour leader was pretty much over as soon as the exit polls were out.

Much before then. As soon as he became PM.

Good. Thats the right thing in the situation.

Labour can aim to recover government in the next election with new leadership and revitalised. A period of principled opposition will be good for them.

Political suicide for the Lib Dems.
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

Conservatives have agreed to giving Lib Dem a referendum on AV but not PR. I think that's the best deal the Lib Dems are going to get. At least with AV, people will be less reluctant to vote Lib Dem because they know that their vote won't be wasted anymore. I can see AV bringing Labour back though, because most Lib Dem voters will probably give Labour their alternative vote. AV will also boost ratings for fringe parties too, probably. The main thing is, everybody's first vote will be for who they truly want in power and tactical voting (which I think is a disease that FPTP brings) will be relegated to the alternative vote. But only PR will flush out tactical voting for good.

  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

I'll be pretty annoyed at the Lib Dems if they don't get a referendum on PR. AV just isn't enough. A Lib-Con alliance is gonna be weird as fuck, but it's infinitely better than having the Tories in government on their own. The Lib Dems can at least use their new power to keep David Cameron and his cronies in check. We definitely need another election fast.
