You're saying that the lads who run the Spitoon are 'fucking hypocrites'?

I simply meant any Muslims in favour of secular democracy. If they're smart enough to know that secular democracy is a good thing, why can't they just drop the bullshit religion?

    Quote from: billy
I think that's harsh. There are many secular Muslims who sincerely argue that Islam does not stipulate any type of government but is only there for spiritual/personal guidance. Say what you will about their beliefs (ignorant/misguided/selective etc...) but they are quite sincere in those beliefs and calling them hypocrites is a bit harsh imho.

Secular Islam is an oxymoron - a complete contradiction in terms. I'm not sure how they've reasoned around it, but it's same hypocritical and intellectually dishonest bullshit that religious people always use to circumvent anything they find inconvenient. Sure, they're a lot less harmful than the extremists, but hypocrites are still hypocrites, with or without the cognitive dissonance. I'm just calling it like I see it.

If there are Muslims who do believe in all that secular democracy stands for, treat their religion as a private faith, and especially if they actually advocate and actively defend secular democracy, then I think it is fairly outrageous to gratuitously abuse them.

What they do is noble, but that doesn't erase the hypocrisy. I'd say I went easy on them.

Slow down there. I don't claim to be some Internet badass - all I did was express an opinion. I realise you folks don't like to criticise people working towards the same aims, but I believe there's always room for improvement. No one is above being called out for hypocrisy.

The lads who run The Spitoon are not "fucking hypocrites". Their compact with their religion is their own business as a matter of private faith. That is part of what secular democracy is all about. And they advocate against Islamists actively and vigorously. Because they disagree with them.

I'd have to agree wholeheartedly on this point. Actually, I'm on my way out to meet up with some friends, a couple of whom consider themselves Muslims. We're meeting at a bar.

I couldn't care less whether the rest of the 'ummah' considers them worthy of punishment, munafiq or whatever. The point is that that is their belief. Why would I attack them for being "hypocrites", as though I'm in a position to judge their religiosity against some imaginary yardstick of islamic purity. I'm not even Muslim, ffs.  Roll Eyes

I don't go around attacking every moderate Christian, so why would I make exceptions out of moderate secular Muslims.

Maybe if more gay Muslims were put on tv the Muslim community would think that 80% of the Muslim population in the UK are gay lol

Look at the last 3 polls !!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_in_the_United_Kingdom_general_election,_2010#2010

Considering that there are 2 debates left, I think the Liberal Democrats stand a very good chance of finishing second.
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

Most of it is probably due to hype. People are overexcited right now. Good to see they are getting attention though. I wouldn't be surprised if they came in second.

Anyone know where I can watch that debate online?
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

The Lib Dems won't finish second. The polling is volatile because of the debates, Cameron and Brown are at a disadvantage because Clegg can play the card of 'make a change' because the Lib Dems have never had to actually do the dirty work of government, hence an attractive novelty factor. That's not to say that they won't do well - they probably will. They might even hold the cards in a hung parliament. But they are not going to overtake either Labour or Conservative. Just their very hardcore seats, the stalwart working class inner city seats up and down the country that are always Labour are enough to ensure that, same with hardcore Tory constuencies. It is in the marginals where there will be a three way fight out, and that is where the Lib Dems could take seats off the other two. But overall, in total number of seats, they won't outnumber Labour or Tory.

Good point billy. What about the popular vote? do you think they could finish second nationally?

  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

I don't think so - but it could be a breakthrough election for them in terms of the seats total, and a significant increase in their overall vote.

I have to say, even though the Tories might still win by a narrow margin, Cameron doesn't seem to be having any positive impact on the country as a whole. He's just so....meh. Nothing. Doesn't inspire at all. And for a government that has been as unpopular as Labour have over the last few years, that is shocking that he is not wiping the floor with Gordon Brown.

I am going to vote for Liberal Democrats for a number of reasons.

The borough I am in is a unsafe Labour seat with Lib Dems the only viable choice.
I like Nick Clegg because he is not Brown and I love Vince

Oh and their opposition to the Digital Economy bill just sealed the deal for me, because of Labour and Tories I have had to invest in a VPN for myself. Pfft.

I can't wait for the debates - I'm hoping Nick Clegg will be able to capitalise and gain some momentum.

    Your wish came true lol.

Before the debate I was going to make an honorary trip to the polling station to exercise my right to scribble all over my ballot paper in protest at the political elite. Now I'm willing to give Lib Dems a chance. If Labour or Conservative get into power then I'll probably give up on party politics because it'll just confirm that this country is locked in a two-party system (two quite corrupt parties) that will last indefinitely. If Lib Dem get into power and disappoint us (how could I expect anything else?) then I'll give up on party politics. If they do us proud, then great!

Lib Dems don't stand a chance of getting into power in this election, even if they have a higher percentage of the votes (cause of our shit system). Let's hope they have a better chance next election though.

I don't want them in power yet personally. I want their policies to be properly scrutinised first.
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

Before the debate there wasn't a doubt in my mind that Conservatives were going to win. Now I'm in a 50:50 split over Conservatives winning and there being a hung parliament.

Maybe we will have a coalition of Lib Dem and Labour. Labour will be more than willing to join the Lib Dems but Lib Dems will be reluctant to join Labour, though they'll sure be tempted. And I can't see Lib Dems forming a coalition with Conservatives.

The unlived life is not worth examining.

I'm interested in what those who are not going to vote are going to do instead. Peru you have said you hate all politicians and panoptic your socialist beliefs are stopping you from voting. So what do you propose to do instead?

I'm still voting and will most likely vote Lib Dems. I prefer their policies to the other two. They're winning over here too. Still hate all of them though parrot Apart from the Monster Raving Loony Party Tongue
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

The thing is, when we vote, we have no idea whether politicians will stay true to their policies or not. Even if they do stay true to their current policies, we don't know what kind of decisions they will make in future unforseeable situations, and whether they will base their decision on the good of the people or for their own selfish reasons.

So what if Lib Dems get into power and they dissappoint you in the good old-fashioned way that politicians do. I guess that would make you even angrier. Is there a point at which you will become so angry that you will stop voting and decide to do something else? Something perhaps a bit more drastic?

The unlived life is not worth examining.
