I think bacon is probably overrated. Any time something is good people exaggerate it.

Pork, sounds disgusting - whether that's childhood indoctrination or the actual look of it is another matter. Besides it's not really healthy for you anyway.

Pretty much this. Smells nasty too (except for the smell of frying bacon).

Apart from gelatine, which even as a muslim I never avoided (something about a "law of change"...or something), I've never had pork. I became a vegetarian shortly before I left Islam though.

I only had pork once accidentally in a restaurant, and it was called "City Chicken". Anyways I turned vegetarian later.

Do ex-Muslims eat pork eventually?  Not if you're vegetarian.

I see there are not so few vegetarian ex-muslims. And I'm not surprised. Because if you become an ex-muslim, that means you are usually someone who thinks and is not afraid to reconsider his previous beliefs. And that makes one more likely to become vegetarian imho.

I have eaten 'haram' chicken though, another benefit of giving up Islam is you don't have to limit yourself to the vegetarian option when you eat out.

What if you're a vegetarian most of the time, does that make you a "vegetarian"?
  • Re: Do ex-muslims eat pork eventually?

I think such identity markers are unnecessary and highly problematic, personally.

Anyway, there's also "flexitarian" and "freegan" types of vegetarians (I'm a flexitarian-veg as of now, if I had to label myself, with a goal of being fully "vegan", which is not just about food, but about all products and services that are consumed).

@thread, besides my former and current vegetarianism/veganism, pork, bacon and ham have been my favourite meats, since I left Islam (but actually pepperoni on pizza is the 1st thing I tried while I was still a Muslim, just to see what would happen - nothing did, of course). But now, especially knowing that pigs are more intelligent and communicative than dogs or cats, I can't justify consuming factory farmed pig (or any kind of) meat.

I find that identities and labels are very egoistic. Once you label yourself something, you start forcing yourself to fit into it. That's why I stopped being vegetarian for a while; I kept wondering whether I really believe in it or did it just to conform to my identity.
  • Re: Do ex-muslims eat pork eventually?

Yep.. I say screw ideology or conforming to any identity markers/labels/categories... I decided that after knowing what I looked up about factory farms, and watching this video in an anthropology class, I literally can not pour my money into a system that brutally kills 9 billion animals a year after torturing them their whole lives. I allow myself some flexibility in some cases (e.g. when travelling or in the case of sushi which I've yet to find a good veg alternative for), and precisely NOT to become a blowhard douchebag like some people become, which is why I want to stay humble and not do this to make anyone else admire me or approve of me, but just because I really can't be part of that system of human cruelty any more.

I'm pretty much the same. I eat seafood on occasion and allow myself to eat meat when I'm traveling. I felt that I missed out on a lot when I went to France and Germany and didn't participate in their cultural meat-eating frenzy.

I'm also glad I stopped being vegetarian for a while in Montreal, because damn, there are some really good, stroke-inducing Jewish deli shops in this town! mysmilie_977

Ahhh yeah see if/when I go visit NYC again, I am going to have to have a proper genoa salami and tomato sandwich from a proper NY deli. Jewish delis that sell ham and cheese are my favourite Grin And if I ever visit Pakistan, I'm having the Student Biryani there... yeah gotta make some exceptions sometimes. Can't get too up our own asses, even while trying to be as ethical as possible, IMO. I think many people think it's a black or white thing, but it really is not and doesn't have to be.

I'm just glad I went to Schwartz's as soon as I went back to eating meat. You don't know Montreal cuisine if you haven't been to Schwartz's. Hands down the best beef I've ever had.

  • Re: Do ex-muslims eat pork eventually?

Even before I went veg, I generally would try to avoid halal and kosher meat as I have found those animals are killed even more brutally (which is hard to believe if you know anything about factory farms, but I think many of us here have seen how halal animals are killed at Eid....) BUT I've made a mental note to consider Schwartz's whenever I visit Montreal (I might try a bit of it, possibly, if I've been good in general) Grin

Yup. At the age of 10. Probably the reason I can't bring myself to eat most kinds of meat without throwing up.

Be prepared for a wait. On peak hours the line extends along the entire block. But believe me, it's worth it.

Also, St. Viateur bagels are the best in town. Only buy them fresh from the bakery, as cold ones in the supermarket don't compare. I remember walking 20 mins and back with my friend in the middle of the night just to get a couple of bagels.

    Are you vegetarian as well?

    Yes Smiley.
And completely vegetarian. I'm not scared about “forcing myself to fit into it”, because I know I do it because I believe in it. I mean, I also tend to label myself straight edge, that never prevented me from drinking a few alcohol for social reasons or just out of curiosity to taste exotic beverage.

Being vegetarian in France is not as easy as being vegetarian in UK or US, still. I hope we got more vegetarians around here so that there will be more vegetarian meals Smiley.

Bacon and ham really are like wines and beers - there are awful ones out there and ones Allah and Mo would eat in heaven!

I strongly recommend a very high quality ham from a specialist delicatessen or France, Italy or Spain.

    ^^ yes.  Agreed.

I splashed out on some expensive bacon not too long ago and it was epic.

Just a shame that everything has become so much more expensive recently and my weekly shopping bill for food hits £190 sometimes.

So cheap bacon it is.  Cry

But cheap bacon is like a cheap hooker, sometimes you just have to do what you need to do.

I really admire your strength of will.

Was that ironic ? I wouldn't mind, and I am actually quite weak-willed. But I don't like the taste of alcohol, and I became vegetarian quite young so I don't feel any urge to eat meat. If I had to stop going on the internet, that would be so much harder grin12!

No. I really want to be a vegetarian myself, but I've never been able to do it. I find most veggies and fruits yucky Tongue

I was a vegetarian for you a when i first left home.  Muslims aren't allowed to be vegetarian.

Then someone in the children's home offered me a bacon sandwich for breakfast Cry

does bacon get status revamped as a proved of murtadiness, there's a lot of others harram thing I wanna try, alcohol for example.

Pork is like the last taboo paranoid.

Alcohol seems the one ex muslims choose to taste before bacon.  They find it easier to get over the alcohol rule than the pork one.

So yea, I reckon it's a good marker for apostasy.  Grin

wish me luck for next month , I'm outta my parent home, gonna try to get drunk.
