The last time I checked they believed the statues are a manifestation of a deity.

Yes and no. It is basically the same way a christian will look to a cross. It's not that the object is actually christ/god. Same way with them.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

That's because there is no overpopulation problem as the media states:

    http://overpopulationisamyth.com/

    Dumb propaganda.

Damn, that breed of stupidity is so fucking annoying. It's that bouncy, confident stupidity. So fucking full of itself. So annoyingly wrong.

And you eat that shit raw.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

    That overpopulation has been exaggerated.

In order for the 7 billion (and rising) people on this Earth right now to live as comfortably as the average American, we'd need three Earths. How is the problem exaggerated?

First we need to define overpopulation.

Second I did not say everyone on earth should live as comfortably as the average American.

The video posted in the link gave some examples of how it is being exaggerated.

First we need to define overpopulation.

It's when the number of people exceeds the capacity of the environment to sustain them.

Second I did not say everyone on earth should live as comfortably as the average American.

Ah right, so there is no overpopulation as long as enough people remain destitute.

The video posted in the link gave some examples of how it is being exaggerated.

Did the makers of the video even spend a passing thought to how cities are actually fed? Do they have any idea how many acres of farmland and industrial estate go into supporting them? How truly massive the supporting infrastructure is for a standard city, or even a town? No, of course not. Facts don't really matter to these pro-life propaganda groups.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Do you really think over population just means the earth is going to run out of space?

Do you consider the consequences of the massive agriculture projects, mega animal farms, increased fossil fuel emissions, water shortages, and economic inequity?

Actually it is third world countries that are producing the highest birth ratio every year.

Not that I am aware of, but that is not the point. The point is when people talk about overpopulation they are taking about what is going on in the cities. The reason why cities have a high population is because people are flocking to them for better opportunities. There isn't much opportunities living in a rural area and there are less resources available in the country. That is why people are flocking to the cities. In truth there are less people living in rural areas then in the cities. If people would stop flocking to the cities there would not be as many problems with population in the cities.

HM is it third world countries that have the highest birthrate. There is already economic inequality in those countries among other things. If you want to solve that problem then try educating the women. Educating the women in these countries will lower the birthrate.

So we agree that lowering the birthrate and reducing the global population would be a good thing?

And they pass our veneration and hopes onto God.

They Saints are distinguishable from deities. Deities don't get their power from someone else. The Saints do get the power from someone else.

Catholics pray to them because of some verse in the Epistle of Timothy about intercessory prayer. They claim asking a Saint to pray for them is the same as asking a living person to pray for them.

The purpose of intercessory prayer is to ask others for help. God knows what is going on, however it is our duty as Christians to help other people and that includes praying for them.

Yes but how is praying for them supposed to help? You seem to be glossing over the basic problem. It goes like this:

In short, you claim to believe in a god that can always be trusted to do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. All other beings (saints included) are less perfect and less knowledgeable, and therefore haven't got the same grasp of the situation that your god has. So, why would you ask one of them to interfere? It doesn't make any sense.

Why would you even make any request to God yourself? If he wants your friends to live, they'll live. If he wants them to die, they'll die. If you ask him to do something that you would like him to do, you are effectively telling him how to run the universe (or at least the bits of it that interest you).

Now you'll probably claim that you aren't doing that at all, but there's no way you'll be able to support that claim. If you make a request of your infallible god, you are implying that he is fallible. If he was not fallible, there would be no reason to ever make a request. The only conclusions that can be drawn are that people who pray for things, anything at all, don't really believe in the sort of deity they claim to believe in, or alternatively they have never really considered what their belief actually means.

Because we don't worship the statues as a manifestation of a deity.

I see Quod has already given you a nudge about this. So, question stll remains: why is it idolatry when non-Christians do it, but not idolatry when Christians do it?

Rubbish. It has to do with the carrying capacity of the entire planet, not just cities. In fact, cities as such are probably the least significant aspect.

Because for some reason Catholics believe the Saints have special privaleges in Heaven.

Wealthy countries. But that has nothing to do with population. Most of the wealthy countries are located in the west where the birthrate is going down. The only reason why we are consuming a lot of resources is because we have the money to buy a lot of stuff.

The only way for wealthy countries to stop this is by consuming less.

Because they believe the Saints will be there advocate.

I wasn't just referring to saints. I was referring to prayer in general.

    You said this:
    Quote
God knows what is going on, however it is our duty as Christians to help other people and that includes praying for them.

    Then I said this:
    Quote
Yes but how is praying for them supposed to help?

"Because they believe the saints will be their advocate" is not an answer to what I asked.

    Quote

Ok, so you're saying that prayer has absolutely no effect other than demonstrating your concern for other people? So if someone told you that prayer did actually have an effect, you would disagree with them?

Also, what about people who pray for something for themselves? What about someone who prays for a job, or to pass their exams? Maybe they're on a plane that's dropping like a brick and are praying to be saved from iminent death. Why are they doing it? It's obviously got nothing to do with showing concern for other people.

    Quote
I'm sorry I disagree with you. God is not fallible.

I gave no definitive opinion on his putative fallibility or lack of it. I said that if you believed prayer to have an effect, then that meant a belief (consciously or unconsciously) in a fallible god. If you believed in an infallible god, you would also have to believe that prayer had no effect. Most Christians seem to want it both ways. They want to believe in an infallible god who can be influenced by the whims of fallible humans, and at the same time they want to claim that they'd never dream of telling God how to do his job. It's amusing watching them tie themselves in knots.

Defund these programs by exposing the coercion, deception, and racism inherent in them.

Emphasize that people are the most valuable resource on the planet, the one resource we cannot do without.

It's not just about income. I can give you a list of things. Basically we're consuming more than we can replace. I think we use in a year what takes a year and a half to be replaced or something like that. That's a problem. If we are using more than we can replace we are fucked.
