Just a quick question for clarification. My understanding of FGM is that there are two types. Although maybe the second type doesn't fall under the category of FGM.
There is a different surgery that takes some of the skin off of the clitoris in the way that there is skin cut from the penis. Is that included in the category of FGM (because the other surgery is much, much worse and actually, if I remember correctly, makes it harder for the woman to use the bathroom)?
Yes, there are about a dozen different types or classifications of FGM, according to the World Health Organization:
http://www.who.int/reproductivehealth/topics/fgm/overview/en If it is included under the category of FGM (the procedure similar to the circumcision), then how come there isn't nearly as much outcry about male circumcision?
Type 1a FGM is analogous to male circumcision (it's the removal of the prepuce or the foreskin of the clitoris, like male circumcision is the removal of the foreskin of the penis).
And yes, there is quite a bit of outcry against male circumcision too. Many of us speak up against both. There is no competition between male and female child genital mutilation - they're both barbaric child abuse. MGM is less damaging to male sexual function than FGM, but is more prevalent, and there is a lot of misinformation around MGM.
Anyway, I'll stay on topic - this is about FGM. There are actually multiple threads on this forum on male circumcision - just search for them if you'd like.
