    My pc won't turn on properly. I just had a new electricity meter fitted so the pc shut down thanks to a lack of foresight on my part when the electric was switched off. I have tried to turn it on since then to no avail.
    i get the screen with the option for system recovery via the f12 button or the boot menu etc but i dont understand the boot menu stuff. I tried system recovery which leads me to a black page with a white loading bar and "windows is loading files" which then leads on to a blank blue page with no options just a very large cursor. What must i do?

    Sounds like you have a corrupted windows driver file, unlucky as my laptop has run out of charge on many occasions, and I have been spared.  

    Have you got the original windows CD to boot from instead?

    P.S How are you sending these messages, via another computer?

    I think it might be a graphics cared failure, if you are seeing larger then normal objects. Seems like a hardware failure.

    I'm not sure. I will check my file box. i must have right? King tut its not larger than normal just as large as all the icons go if you log in on basic settings. Like that large if you get my drift. Oh im using my mobile phone to post these messages.

    It is otherwise known as the "blue screen of death" if you want to google the problem.

    Hang on, this is a new computer isn't it? And it's the middle of the day over there, right? Call the bloody shop you got it from. They should be opening up about now.

    By the way, un-plug everything you don't need, such as printers modems etc. Then turn the power off, for about 10 seconds then restart, it could be your computer might be trying to boot from USB, or you can try going into BIOS and swapping to boot from 1(hardrive), 2(CD-rom).

    Also if that does not work, boot in save mode with command prompt.

    1. start vista in safe mode with command prompt
    2. type "msconfig" (in run...) and select diagnostic start up
    3. Restart computer. If all has gone well you should able to see your screen
    4. Select or find `Services`. It may be laborious but you have to switch them all on again,
    Automatic or manual depending on your particular requirements.

    If that does not work also try this, run in safe mood with command prompt, hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE, select the running processor "explorer.exe" then select "end processor" and then go back to applications and run explorer.exe again.

    I cant start it in safe mode rememberi just a blue screen. I also cant google for some reason so i cant get the facts on the blue death thing. I dont have a disc. The pc is just over a year old and the insurance certificate says not covered in the event of power failure the way i described happen. Im going to phone somone now and see if they can help anyway Cry

    The power going off shouldn't kill the thing. It's just like shutting it down incorrectly by hitting the switch instead of going through normal shutdown. Shouldn't be a huge drama to sort.

    Anyway I found out something cool. You can get a Blue Screen of Death screensaver. parrot

    1, turn computer off
    2, unplug everything off from the USB slots apart from keyboard and mouse (obviously)

    3. Restart computer - F8 - By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer beep when you reboot it, you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode. If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again as you have to be quick when you press it. I have found that during boot up right after the computer shows you all the equipment , memory, etc installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key you will usually be able to get to the desired menu. Once your in safemode booted up, let me know.

    That's bloody awesome. I'm going to set my boyfriend's computer up with this screen saver so he shits himself next time he turns his television on.

    When you restart, do you not see a black screen with some white text on it, like the name of the manufacturer, and some info about your computer,?

    The only page i can get is the boot menu. Except right now it is asking me to select a boot first device. Hard drive group -ch2 m: st3360320as or in the same group -bootable add in cards. Or from the next group cdrom group -ch3 : hl - dt - st dvd - ram gh10l
