The shop you bought the thing from should be able to give you a disc cheap. You've already paid for the license so a lot of shops over here will do that for you. Should be the same in the UK.

I got an XP installation disc for $5.

Yeah I know, but a cheap legit disc for a few quid is worth having if you can get it.

If the buggers want serious money that's different.

Im on the f8 page. I have the option to:

    -start in safe mode.

    -safe mode with networking

    -safe mode with command prompt.

    -enable boot logging

    -enable low res video

    -last known good configuration (advanced)

    -directory services restore mode

    -debugging mode

-disable automatic restart on system failure

    -disable driver signature enforcement

    -start windows normally.

and im still on hold on the phone lol what shoul i attempt?

On my computer "Repair your computer" option is at the top. Not sure why you don't have that option. And most new computers have vista preinstalled. You should find the option to reinstall it by hitting one of the F keys.

    Repair your computer
    Safe mode
    Safe mode with networking
    Safe mode with command prompt
    Enable boot logging
    Enable low resolution video (640 ? 480)
    Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
    Directory services restore mode
    Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
    Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
    Start Windows normally

Im not sure. Its worth a try. I will ask at the pc shop tomorrow. Maybe this is all related to me breaking a mirror yesterday. My pc broke today. The online store doesnt take my card and i burnt my leg on the oven door. 7 years of this will drive me mad.

Bleh. Don't start with that rubbish or you'll put yourself in a tailspin.  parrot

Have you tried asking the shop you bought the thing from. That's what I did when I wanted a disc. Because they have a stack of them lying around anyway, and because they can easily burn a new one on a blank disc for stuff all, and because they know you have already purchased a legit license from them they will often let you have a physical disc straight in your hand for very little cost. The license is what costs money. The discs themselves are almost worthless.

This is by far the easiest way of sorting an installation if they will do this. If they are going to be assholes about it then yeah, someone will hook you up with a disc. No problem.

I'm going to get Ubuntu actually. It's getting really good and I have the space for a dual boot with no worries and Ubuntu comes pre-configured for setting up a dual boot with Windows anyway, so I can easily run both XP and Ubuntu. I'll give Ubuntu a good flogging and see how it goes.

Cool. Just be aware that reinstalling your operating system will completely wipe your C drive. That means any content that is not backed up to another drive will be permanently lost. No file recovery program will be able to get it back.

If there is any critical content on your C drive you will need to extract it before reinstalling the OS.

Yeah well that's the tricky bit, innit. How many drives have you got?

ETA: Actually I'm not sure how you'd do it. Gonna have to ask around a bit. If you have an extra drive or two you could install to one of those and then try hauling out the contents of C, but there's probably a better way of doing it.

Ok, did some asking around and pulling stuff out of C drive is going to be a pain and would probably cost you a bit too. Since reinstalling the OS will wipe C drive and since it may be a hardware problem anyway the consensus is that you should take the thing into your pooter shop and get it tested.

If it is a memory chip or power supply that got fried by a power surge then they can be replaced without reinstalling the OS, which means you'd be back in business without any loss of data, and they'll need to be done anyway.

If the pooter itself is fine and it's the OS that needs fixing then you're basically looking at losing everything you had on your C drive, unless you get some clever bastards to do some fancy recovery trickery which will probably set you back around 100 quid.

If you have all of C drive backed up to another drive then no problem.

She can install on a partition. Or if she has more then one drive she can install on another drive, or she can even make a USB housing and make an external USB hard-drive... But that might be a little too complex for her. In any case, depending on her BIOS and Hard rive, she might not be able to partition until she reformats, but if this is a pre-bundled install, then it is more then likely her drive will already be partitioned so the only thing she needs to do is installed on the "recovery"  partition, and boot from that partition which will when logged in give her access to her "C drive" - the failed paration, she only either extract the stuff she needs or, she could try to repair it, by copying her windows folder (from her working OP) and pasting it to her corrupted one and replacing all files and then try booting from the original.

@ Berbs lol, @ your brother, but if I did live near you I could fix it for you, you know being an overclocker and someone who builds his own computers. Yeah as long as I could keep my consantration on fixing then computer then you in your high heels and risque dress.

OS, this is not a hardrive failure her hardrive is fine, if her hardrive was fucked then it would not even get past the first boot screen it would say "hardrive not found" also, since this is a pre-installed OP she bought it is more then likely it has a partition on C drive... So she can install ontop of her recovery partition which might be named "E Drive" and keep her "C drive" intact. All she has to do is format the recovery partition and install onto there, and she should be good as Larry unless it is a graphics card failure, which I suspect it might be. Taking it to a computer shop I would not trust them, it might be a minor issue and they could charge her loads of money as she is not an expert on computers. The only time I go to a computer shop is, when it is a hardrive failure.  As it very hard to fix, as the drive is not spinning up. But really now I keep a solid-state drive, for backup, mainly for music, and porn.
