    Yeah but by default it'll try to install to C, which is fine if you know how to change that. Windows like C. Anyway I reckon getting the thing checked out is worthwhile because I'm sure the cause of the problem is the power surge it copped when the power came back on, and if it is a hardware problem talking about the OS is a waste of time.

    Get the hardware checked out, which shouldn't cost much. If the hardware is fine then worry about the OS.

    ETA: And I said hardware, not hard drive. I know the drive is ok but the surge may have fucked something else.

    No, it should warn her that she is trying to install ontop of an already installed OP system, it might as her something like "repair" which would be a good idea to click on. But it is very easy to install on a recovery partition, you format the recovery partition and install on it. The recovery partition is just BS pre-bundled crap. I could give her walk through each screen if she wants when she is installing. I could tell her how to do it.

    Guys you are confusing me now lol i dont mind if i lose the stuff i have saved. I mean some are pics of the kids i can never recover and of course all my itunes music which i never got round to backing up. But its ok. Im not sentimental and im good at letting go of stuff. As long as i can get the pc up and running i can just reinstall what i need and take new pics.

    now i have a recovery disk for microsoft windows vista 64 bit coming in the post. Hopefully tomorrow but because of the easter holiday it might not arrive til tuesday. What i want to know is is this the right disk (there was a choice of 2 for my computer. Windows vista or the one with the 64 bit thing) or did i need the one without the 64 bit thing?

    also once the disk arrives is it as simple as sticking the disk in and letting it do its work?

    We can't really tell you if the 64 bit version is the right one (the other one is 32 bit,) because that depends on what kind of CPU you have installed in your computer. You have to find this out somehow, perhaps by  looking at the stickers (if existent) on your computer, or the manuals that were included with your PC.

    I'm not sure about that. If there's no damaged hardware and the problem lies with the software installation, then the recovery disk should help repairing it.

    well 64 bit is not for the avarage user as not all apps are cofiged to run on a 64 bit prosseor not to mention u need a 64bit compatible cpu. I advice you to get a 34bit version. 64 bit is for geeks, gammers, overclockers and benchmarkers. Depending on you cpu if its bout a year old or less u should be able to run it.     It might have said 64 bit compatible. It is just that normally they don't sell 64 bit windows installed on a pre bundle, also if yours was a 34bit vista ultimate this disk will be redundant as it is a recovery disk, which is the wrong disk, you needed the operating disk. You need the vista install disk, which are not cheap. But you don't need the serial as you already have a serial so it would be better just to get a pirated one and use your own original serial on it.

    Well, it should say on your computer, look on your computer there should be a sticker, reading vista, also look at the back there should be a serial written secularity paper which will also have "Microsoft" written on it as well as "label not to be sold separately" you should call up your manufacture who made the computer tell them your system crashed you have the serial code but need the windows vista install disk, which you should have got with the computer.

    I can send you a recovery disk, for vista 34bit, if the 64bit does not work, then you should be set, or you can go and get it from the store.

    Then, once you have the disks, put the disk into your drive, restart the computer and a new screen should pop up, asking to fix the boot-manger, and other options, try fixing the boot-manger first.

    Still no disk. Made a whole bunch of phone calls today only to be told it will take 2 weeks to arrive since it is coming from hungary. I mean whats worse is it could turn out to be the wrong disk and then what lol 2 weeks to return it and then another 2 weeks for the right one to be sent out. What shit service finmad

    Berbs, take the bloody thing to the shop you bought it from. They will have install discs for Africa, plus if it has shat itself on some minor hardware they can diagnose that and they can do it all a lot faster than two weeks.
