Nazi Germany did not have a single hijab. Your definition of 'liberal' is frankly rather wonky. I think you're actually looking for most sexually permissive societies, not the most liberal. Two wholly different things.

I probably meant it in terms of the most liberal society, rather than the most liberal government. A society without hijab  = liberal!

This logic is flawed. No one wearing a headscarf doesn't make a society liberal, it is the possibility to not wear headscarf or to headscarf (i.e. the possibility to choose for yourself) that makes a society liberal.

Certainly you will agree that forcing people to cover their body in public is an expression of sexual repression. So, in a liberal society, it should be possible to walk around nakedly. However, you will not call a society non-liberal just because people choose to wear clothes.

Yes, they had. Wearing head scarves was quite common in Europe until a few decades ago and it is still not unusual for elderly people in rural areas.

Oh right, true.. well those are still not hijabs or religious-wear.  Tongue

You have a point blackdog  Afro. I didn't think of it from that perspective.

If a law passed saying my mum had to remove her hijab, I would explain to her that its the way things work in 2009. But people can be different and I respect that.

Yes Kafirist, that is correct  dance . I'd prefer sexually liberal over sexually permissive though.

My take on a "liberal society" is one where self-enforced strictures and identities are the lowest. Where people can choose to be which individual they want, whether it's a conservative Muslim or a Gay Atheist.

I honestly think America is the most liberal society on earth. There's a place for every taste and every lifestyle, it has no true ethnic identity and the American identity is in constant flux.

European countries look like an ethnic time bomb to me.

Well Europe needs to have a serious debate. There are too many extremes, bleurgh I dont even feel like thinking about it. Im thinking about moving to either Canada or America.

They seem like pretty liberal society, though Australia seems a bit racist in it's general cultural attitude.

parrot What part of the news?

I'm just wondering because I've lived in Australia and I also think some parts of the culture are racist. So I'm wondering why you also think that.
  • Re: What is the most secular & sexually liberal country in the world?

Certain events in Australia's history lead me to believe it's kind of racist: white australia policy, cronulla riots, incidents of racial abuse, treatment of aborigines.

Of course some of the racism is related to the Lebanese.. who, frankly, have been rather racist themselves. The recent attacks on Indian students for example were done by mostly Lebs.

Perhaps my conception is a bit skewed, but I'm pretty sure compared to Canada, Australia is considerbaly more racially charged.

I guess you have a point. May be this stuff should be allowed in public & in work, etc, but at the very least no children should be allowed to wear any religious symbols anywhere in public or in private because its child abuse  finmad

Okay, and when kids continue to wear hijab, kufi, yarmulkes and crosses? What then? Have the cops give them/the parents a citation? And when they keep doing it anyway (I assure you many will)? Arrest them or the parents? If it's the parents, the kids get put into state custody? Or maybe just throw the kids into jail? What you're talking about will eventually lead to jailing people for their religious practices-- no way around it.

No matter how liberal your intentions, I assure you the practical consequences of implementing such a ban will be anything but liberal-- they will be authoritarian, draconian, and decidedly illiberal.

My take on a "liberal society" is one where self-enforced strictures and identities are the lowest. Where people can choose to be which individual they want, whether it's a conservative Muslim or a Gay Atheist.

     Afro

The two things, however, that would give me serious pause for declaring America the most liberal society:

    1. The overall level of religiosity in comparison with Europe

    2. Our world-leading incarceration rate and draconian drug laws

    fuck you

France, one of the few countries with genuine secularism, and perhaps the most sexually liberal as well.

Liberal society and culture is what causes much of the resentments, anxiety and self-alienation amongst Muslims living in the UK, and in Europe and elsewhere too. They see it as an affront to the natural order - the natural order of Islam with its communality, strictly delineated gender roles, strictly defined sexual choice and laws of marriage and life partners, erotic and marital independance, the centrality of the control of the patriarch, and it manifests itself in the rage and disgust of many Muslims, Muslim ideologues, in the clashes of culture, the clashes of desire between  sons / daughters and mothers and fathers.

It expresses itself in many ways - a disgust with liberal society and culture, a visceral disgust, expressed as repulsion for certain aspects of kuffar society. It leads to the exagerrated sense of grievance and self-alienation that they project onto kuffar society.

The UK is a great place, with a strong liberal tradition, freedom of religion, free speech, with a strong sense of fair play, a strong secular space, a self-reflecting society that is self-critical and self-correcting. Its not perfect, but then nowhere is, not even America. Liberal societies are all about striving to perfect themselves in increments and through change and innovation, about balancing rights and responsibilities, about keeping alive the idea of freedom and liberal society - the strive to make a more perfect society is unceasing, will never be achieved, but the journey there makes the society what it is.

Islam teaches that it is already perfect, that perfection has been reached, that all else is false, in a state of flux, or simply in a state of ignorance and backwardness until it sees the correct path that is submission-perfection, Islam. And that is why so much traction arises between Islam and free, liberal, secular, democratic societies in which women are equal in law, and Jews and polytheists and gays and atheists alike are accorded respect, dignity and equality. That really freaks the life out of Muslims.

To be fair many immigrants dress like a paki (i'm allowed to use that term just like black folks can call each other niggas) and can't speak english. Plus sometimes they have a tendency to stare at women like they've never seen one before in their lives...

What I am confused about is how even second generation English is atrocious; and the interesting part, a Pakistani gay Muslim couldn't work out why no guy wanted to touch him with a forty foot barge pole (after going to mainstream gay night clubs) - he claims that it because of racism, and he proceeds to dress up in an outfit akin to wearing pyjama's in public.

It is as though there is an inability of matching cause and effect together.

The problem with banning hijabs is you may be helping restrict the freedoms of women who's freedoms are already restricted.

I see it like this: A Muslim lady that takes her hijab off can now be seen by the public and perhaps possibly integrate into the country further. She now has experienced life in a hijab and life without a hijab, and so it might break the taboo for that woman and make her feel like she isn't required to wear it anymore. I'm all for the banning of hijab's, if statistics say anything then it is that Muslims  have the hardest time of any minority in integrating into society. I think it's got to do with their reluctance to break from tradition and assimilate properly. You rarely see that problem with Indians or Africans around here.

Anyway, for most liberal country, I'd say perhaps the Netherlands. First country to legalize same-sex marriage, one of the highest rates of gender equality and LGBT rights. Legalized marijuana. Always been a front-runner for this sort of thing. Scandinavian countries are always good, Sweden is supposed to have the best gender equality rating (of a study) of any country in the world. Australia is good, but still fairly conservative, but that's a generational thing because most of the youngsters are a lot more liberal. Canada is pretty good.

Coupled with that - a 'people placements' for new immigrants so that ghettos don't develop; you're forced to live surrounded by kaffirs in kaffir clothes and living a kaffir life.

Lets also remember, this isn't an immigration issue - many, many, many immigrants integrate without any problems within the UK; it is a Muslim issue.

Definitely NL, cos of the way they teach sex. They teach relationships and organs (not the whole sex act), till around 7 or 8 (only teach reading at 6). Then they teach sex from 8ish, with contraception clubs where teens put condoms of prosthetics in teams (optional), et cetera. Then you have legalised sex work with checks on the brothels (licenses) and STI tests for the Sex Workers. You also have obvious sex shops and cinemas, with quit big (usually yellow) signs. Then you have the "coffee shops" where it is legal for you to smoke and take certain drugs, and then you have people selling drug seeds and roots on the markets, with an allowed growth amount, only big enough for your own and a few others usage, but not commercially. 16 yr olds are allowed beer and wine, 18 for spirits. And you tend to find people socialise together, all age groups et cetera. Other liberal places, tribes perhaps?
