He was against sectarianism and died without revealing whether he was a Sunni or Shia.

This probably doesn't matter, Qassim's father was an Arab Sunni while his mother was a Kurd Shi'ite.

And was America's friend for over two decades !

In fact if it wasn't for the CIA, Abdul Karim Qassim would not have been overthrown in 1963. He was the greatest leader we ever had. He overthrew the monarchy and established a strong national government. He ended feudalism and distributed the lands to the peasants. He nationalised the oil industry and established the National Iraqi Oil Company. He was against sectarianism and died without revealing whether he was a Sunni or Shia. He even ordered that all the restrictions on the remaining 20,000 or so Iraqi Jews be lifted and their rights be fully restored and he visited their synagogues every year and begged them to stay in Iraq*. He outlawed polygamy, introduced a minimum age of marriage (18), and ordered courts to give women equal inherticance. He was nicknamed "Abdulkareem Roundabout" because he built more roads and roundabouts than any other president. He also opposed Nasser and pan-Arabism.
Despite all of that, the US didn't like him and orchestrated his assassination because he made friends with the commies !!

The US recruited the Baathists and funded them starting from the late 50s. They only thing they cared about was destroying the commmunists of Iraq who BTW were the largest movement in Iraq in the 60s.

    * Iraqi Jews love him so much that many of them still to this day have his picture hanged in their houses. Specially those who didn't go to Israel and chose to go to the UK, US, Canada instead.
In fact one Iraqi Jew who left in Iraq in the 70s who lives in the UK now has become online friends with me. His avatar on the forum we frequent is a menorah holding the coat of arms of the 1958 revolution led by Qassim.

This probably doesn't matter, Qassim's father was an Arab Sunni while his mother was a Kurd Shi'ite.

What do you mean "doesn't matter" ? Like I said many people at the time didn't know whether he was Sunni or Shia. And BTW, the Wiki article quotes one source on this. This is still under debate.

Now even if he was a Sunni, it didn't affect his governance in any way.

Here is a photo of him visiting Shiite Ayatollah Muhsin Al-Hakim:

WOW!  What a man IA, wish we had more people like him in this world [ in each and every country]. He is an epitome of a true nationalist. Iraq should give him the highest honor possible.

He's still immensely popular among the communists, leftists, feminists, religious minorities and the disadvantaged. There is talk of building a statue of him in Baghdad. Sunnis generally don't like him because he opposed Nasser, pan-Arabists, and socially conservative tribal sheiks.

I don't wanna portray the man as an infallible god. I do have issues with some of his policies but I shouldn't go into details now. I don't want to hijack the thread anymore. Maybe another time.

That is to be expected given that he was an human being, but I am sure his deeds outweighed his misdeeds.

Just forget about what I said. I don't remember why I put "doesn't matter" lol. Anyway, I don't think he ever considered himself Sunni or Shia. Since he comes from a mixed background (well mixed as in different Islamic sects), it could be likely he didn't follow one or the other, but I don't really know.

Yes he never masqueraded under the banner of religion. He was a private person when it came to his faith.

Was watching a program on Al Jazeera just now about how auditing the Iraqi aid funds was prevented by the US defence.  The US might have had some high ideals (apart from other interests obviously) but they really handled the situation badly in certain respects.  Not that this wasn't predictable.  I remember a US general being asked about millions of missing funds and him replying that it was not important.

Yep.  The dismantling of all the apparatus was a rather stupid thing to do.  They also seem to have changed a few of their policies.

constitutional rights..  BULLSHIT!! it IS a flagrant slap in the face, and I tell ya what,
There's gonna be "The American Revolution -- The Sequel"  IF that mosque gets built.

It is a constitutional right. It may not be considerate on thier part but they have the right to build that mosque. They are a bit short-sighted. If I was in their shoes, I would build the mosque somewhere else.
However, it is NOT a slap in the face. We cannot equate the people who are building the mosque to those who did 9/11. We should not lump them together as one group. My dad and mum are Muslims but they fucking hate Al-Qaeda and they were appallled by the 9/11 attacks.
Jinn and Tonic, I like you. I really do but your're dead wrong in this issue. It is not a slap in the face of Americans. With all due respect, you sound like an Iraqi friend of mine who said he was against building an Iranian-funded mosques in Iraq [on account of the Iraqi-Iran war]. Instead of "slap in the face", he said "it would be a spit in the face of Iraqis". Fuck that. Freedom of religion trumps all. Unless you can prove to me the funders or Imams of this mosque have incited violence, you cannot argue for preventing the building of the mosque. Maybe I'm a bleeding heart liberal but I don't want the government to start banning mosuqes.
If you really want to stop the construction of this mosque, I suggest you start a non-governmental campaign to boycot any company or individual who might help in the construction.

    Fair enough.

He did write a Bible taking out most of the biblical myths and miracles, though.

A saying of his happens to be: "Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man."

I'm surprised he gave Christianity the cake, considering that he studied Islam when fighting Muslim pirates in Africa.

I agree. They have every right to build the mosque.

Of course it's terrible and stupid idea that will incite more hatred and resentment against Muslims. Muslims are not responsible for 9/11 but those 19 cunt muscles were very much motivated by Islam and it's concepts of martyrdom. Building a mosque there is like building a Serbian Orthodox church on top of a Srebrenica mass grave site.

    Uh, what's your point?

What's wrong with military conquest? Look at half the fucking cities in North America and their white European names, guess how this land was taken? Military conquest!

Its a ridiculous and idiotic complaint and shows a complete ignorance of muslim history. For muslims 'Cordoba' doesn't represent conquest, it represents a high point of Muslim civilization where many intellectual and scientific achievments were made. Cordoba was for a long time one of the most advanced and tolerant places on earth.. and definitely the nicest place in Europe. I think the only good thing about this mosque is that it's called Corodoba, because Cordoba is synonymous with tolerance and a more benign and liberal Islam for many Muslims. There is nothing wrong with naming the mosque Cordoba house.

Seriously, there are lots of things to bitch about when its comes to this mosque and muslims in general. But complaining about the name "Cordoba"? Gimme a fucking break.
