Hamza Yusuf knows how to mesmerise his audience and peotically find allegories linking Islamic dogma to modern day life.  Why can't he try to see what solid evidence there is for all the dogmas in Islam?

I just read this quote by Bertrand Russell that I feel describes Hamza Yusuf:

The immense majority of intellectually eminent men disbelieve in Christian religion, but they conceal the fact in public, because they are afraid of losing their incomes.

I wouldn't go as far as say that Hamza Yusuf consciously deceives his audience.  He is more self-deluding, I think.  Plus, as Eliphaz said, he has emotionally committed himself to Islam and is not willing to let go no matter what.

    Quote
Zaynab wanted to be wed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and had only accepted the marriage to Zaid due to the Prophet's request of her to do so. So the Prophet, peace be upon him, had kept the matter quiet for fear that if people knew, it would detract from and undermine his essential spiritual message to the people. However, the Qur'an "leaked" this private conversation to the people through the very source of the conversation. Aishah said about the above verse, "Had the Prophet hidden anything from his revelation, it would have been this verse due to the heavy impact it had upon him." This "leak" was clearly designed to reveal the utter sincerity of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his complete and total truthfulness and transparency about his own personal life as well as everything revealed to him.

This reeks of beardo eroticism for Mo. Roll Eyes

    Any ordinary proof will do

I beg to differ, sir. Extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary proof.

And you have to admit, an all powerful deity who needs little humans to kiss his big intergalactic butt at all times to keep him from have the mother-of-all-Baby-Huey-temper-tantrums is a rather extra-ordinary claim. Tongue

Smiley  I agree, but I would still be happy with some ordinary proof- thats all I am asking for & am yet to hear anything.  Simply saying the Quran is the book of God because Muhammed said so does not cut the mustard with me.

At this point, just some logical consistency feels like too much to ask for from religion, in general.

I don't know what it is about Hamza Yusuf. But as soon as I hear him speak I tend to gain faith in this religion again. I don't know what is going on. For example, I have tried to stay away from listening to any of his talks but today I came across his farewell semester ending talk:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6NfJi0BDgg&feature=player_embedded

And after listening to it, I started questioning my sanity to leave this religion.

solroger, he doesn't care whether gain faith in  his religion or not but what he wants is  your  donations to run his university., didn't you watch the video?? please watch it after 16 minutes.. he wants donors and ultimately Allah is the provider., Sahaba didn't even had TIES TO TIE CAMELS... ALLAH GAVE EVERYTHING after   prophet moved  to madina and eliminated all juice over there., I hope  Hamza Yusuf is not going act the way  Prophet PBUH acted in Madina on juice for running his university..

Maybe your atavistic certainties about faith, which you have become estranged from, find echoes in his rhetoric and his own certainty, and a part of you feels emotionally bonded to those certainties?

Although I knew a lot of these guys I was never one of them and I always felt uncomfortable about the way they loved to dazzle their audience with their eloquence and knowledge and yet say very little in reality - and worst of all for me fail to answer the real issues and questions that were troubling me. They would mention the issues but cleverly avoid them or give a confusing answer that gave the illusion they had answered it - but they hadn't.

Yup Hassan. I have noticed this too. Muslims talk alot. And I mean ALOT. And its about really really boring, meaningless, irrelevant, insignificant, redundant, personal shit also.

You see Muslims talking excessively. Its especially observable amongst the dawah shitheads and those who post on youtube and forums. They talk uneccessarily about themselves and are such a drag.

I'm wondering "why are you telling me all this?".

It's like, religion is an outlet for them. Like some scene, or a social clique thing. Nothing about spirituality.

No manliness, no proper conduct, no seriousness, no substance. They take God(or whatever) into their hands and use "Him"(or Her or It) for the sake of their own self extravagance and indulgence.

It's really funny because I think even Hindus would find that to be idolatry.

In Hindusm, spirituality is an extremely personal thing, and eveyone keeps what they know to themselves. Hindus don't tell the whole world about it. Its secret, confidential, unspoken and sacred. It's not something to be announced loudly on stage nor shared with strangers or family and friends.

The only exception are the exceedingly obnoxious and silly ISCKONITES/"Hare Krishnas". And its because they are non-Indian Hindus, mainly Westerners who were ex-Christians so they carry on with their filthy Abrahamic mentality and behaviour. And also since they were non Indians that were (uncomfortably) enthusiastic their spiritual master was easy and liberal on them. And now its totally run by outsiders.

Fake friends flatter you. Their compliments are made up. Nasty enemies criticize you harshly. They pick on you unnecessarily. Neither of them help you improve yourself. The best critic is honest and knows you exactly and the best person you can choose to follow is someone closest to you.

The closest thing I could find to that was this:
'There is indeed a good example for you in the Messenger of Allah - for the one who has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah profusely.' (Quran 33:21)

Also, in his last sermon he said: 'I leave behind me two things, the QUR'AN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.'

'Let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.'

Its just the status of him, the status in which he is held as the perfect man, whose sunnah is incumbent on every Muslim, isn't it? Its like part of the oxygen that all Muslims must breathe.

i ask because if it was not actually written in islamic scripture then some apologists could wriggle there way out of the Aisha age issue by saying he is not to be followed completely

Secularism is what makes us modern. Its what gives us our rights. Its what created a space for the individual to not be overwhelmed by the authority of the collective. It is entwined with equality for women, liberation of gays, free speech and free conscience, liberalism, rationalism, scientific inquiry, and so on.

And Hamza Yusuf thinks it is the biggest enemy facing Islam today.

And then guys like him complain about how Islam is viewed as reactionary.

He is setting his entire religion against the underpinning of modernity, without any sense of awareness at all.

And this guy is feted as a 'moderate'.

If he still believes this, it kind of redefines what moderate means doesn't it.

Sometimes, I really just do think, 'Islam is fucked'

This video makes me feel like that.
